Jumping

So I'm 25 weeks or so pregnant and my 8 month old boxer won't stop jumping on me when I get home. She really likes to jump and hit me in the stomach. I've been sort of blocking her access to my stomach with my purse/lunch box and ignoring her until she calms down and only petting her when she's sitting, but sometimes she still gets me (and H she goes for the junk on him ;)). I would like her to stop doin this before baby comes; although we've never really gotten our other boxer to stop doing that to other people. I've tried everything I can think of with the ignoring and not paying attention to them until they sit, one trainer actually told me to put my finger over his nose when he jumped. Didn't really help. The older one doesn't jump on me at all. Just everyone else. Part of the problem when some people come over is they pay too much attention to them as soon at they walk in an the dogs are super excited they're there anyway. Like loving on them and getting them even more excited even after I tell them to ignore them until they calm down and are sitting and stop again if they go crazy again.. Some times even that doesn't help and they just "hug them" they get their front legs on either side of your hips and kiss all over them.. Some people don't enjoy boxer kisses so much.. ESP when they're slobbery.. What do I do ?

Re: Jumping

  • Sounds like a guest problem as much as (or even moreso than) a dog problem. You're trying to curb the jumping and they're reinforcing it.

My pittie used to jump up on me too. When I got home from work, if he started jumping on me, I turned my back on him, crossed my arms over my chest, and stared at the ceiling. From that position, I told him to sit. If/when he did, I praised him and gave him treats (we had a key/mail rack near the front door, and I kept a pouch of treats up there).

Try employing your guests in the training. Have them come over, come inside and ignore the dog when she jumps. Have them give the sit command, and reward with praise and treats when she does. Tell them the whole routine beforehand, so they know what it is you want them to do.

Great advice!  I did the same thing with my dog and it has worked well.  I would say 95% of the time she sits waiting for pats from us.  Guests are a different problem.  I just try to be right next toher and tell the guests "please don't let her jump on you, we're really trying to work on it". I know some people say - oh I don't mind, it's ok.  I usually say - well she can't do it when my 92 year old grandmother comes over and she doesn't know the difference.  That usually does the trick.  Good Luck!
