Birth Control Pills for migraine sufferers?

I have been off BCP for  4 years ( I was having babies). I get numerous migraines throughout the month including menstrual migraines. When I was taking the Pill , Ortho Tri Cyclen, my migraines would be worse. I don't want an IUD or the Ring. Anyone with migraines take a Pill that does not make them worse. I'll be going to the doctor in a few weeks to discuss this as well.

Re: Birth Control Pills for migraine sufferers?

  • I've suffered from headaches and migraines for years and Ortho Tri made it so much worse!!

So after having LO I discussed this with my gyno and he recommended I go on low estrogen pill.   We talked a while about it because there were different options (levels of estrogen) and generic vs. brand.   I'm not at home and honestly I forgot the exact pill I started....but it's been great and has not caused any issues!

I would talk to your doc and the different low estrogen pill options.

  • Definitely try a low estrogen pill or a pill where you have the same amount of hormones all month. I would also recommend a type of BC that eliminates the sugar pill week so you are constantly taking the hormones.
  • I never had a migraine my entire life until I started Ortho Tri Cyclen as a teenager, and 3 years into taking it was getting monthly migraines. I switched to Loestrin 24 FE and it got much better, but I still got the occasional one. I know you said no IUD, but I've been on Mirena for 4 months and haven't had a migraine yet. Maybe look into the mini pill or another progesterone-only birth control. You have to be much more careful with the mini pill, but it might be what you're looking for.
