Addressing Newly Married Couples

I am finally starting to write my TYs, I am about 1/3 of the way done. Since I sent out invites 2 of the engaged couples are now married and I am confused how to address their TY.

(1) The man has kept his last name, and the women has hyphenated... Is it John Smith and Jane Jones-Smith? What about for possible future formal invites, is she Ms. or Mrs.?

(2) Married lesbian couple who share the same last name... who goes first... is it Jane and Holly Smith? What about for possible future formal invites, is it Mrs. and Mrs.?

TIA!

Re: Addressing Newly Married Couples

  • I would probably do Mr. and Mrs. John Smith for the first one.  She would be a Mrs. because she is married.  The second one I have no clue what I would do.

  • I agree with PP about John Smith.  I think that's the best way you can address them without typing out Mr. John Smith and Mrs. Jane Jones-Smith, which is ridiculous, but also proper.  (btw, Ms. I thought was only used for divorcees or unknown marital statuses, Mrs. is always for married)

For the lesbian couple, I would just say Mrs. and Mrs. Smith-Miller (especially if they share the hyphenated last name). If you want to include their first names, I suppose just stick to alphabetical order ( i.e. Mrs. Holly and Mrs. Jane Smith-Miller).  And omitting the Mrs.'s for less formal: Holly and Jane Smith-Miller (again, alphabetical order)

  • 1) the "proper" way is Mr. John Smith and Mrs. Jane Jones-Smith, with out the Mr./Mrs. for informal.

    2) Informally, I would say go alphabetically, that seems to be a reoccurring etiquette theme, so Holly & Jane Smith, although I don?t know that it matters. Formally, I had to Google, which was surprising difficult. One site suggested The Madames Jane & Holly Smith which seems out dated to me. You could always do Mrs. Holly & Mrs. Jane Smith.
