Condo/townhouse recs?

I might be moving back to Minneapolis. I don't know where I'll be working but I will be likely applying for positions at a college/university. I want a condo/townhouse with a garage and one where I don't have to worry about any outside maintenance like snow removal. I would love something cottagey/unique with a backyard space. Wood floors would be awesome. Fully renovated would be awesome but still has charm.

I want to live close to the city for resale purposes but I'm kind of a suburban person. Safety is really important. I like the St Louis park area. I really like St. Paul but all of my family lives on the Minneapolis side with the closest family member in Richfield. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Condo/townhouse recs?

  • I've never looked at buying a condo/townhome, so I'm not sure how helpful this will be!  I have a friend who owns a nice condo in Woodbury, but that's way East.

We have another couple that we're friends with who just bought a townhome in Plymouth (might be too far West?).  I think they were like Fernbrook or something like that.  It looked very well upkept, and their unit had an awesome layout. (And they have two dogs, so pets are allowed.)

  • There are a decent number of townhouses for sale in my area in Eagan. There's also a really cool looking new row house/condo development.
  • You might be able to find a carriage house that's been renovated in the Lowry Hill/Kenwood area of Minneapolis.  There's some great little places there....might be a little on the pricey side, but it's a nice neighborhood.
  • You'll probably have to live in the suburbs to get something like what you are looking for. Anything in Minneapolis/St. Paul with those specifics things are going to be pricey. I would try St. Louis Park/Hopkins/Edina since it's close to Minneapolis.

  • I have a condo at Cedar Trails Condominiums in St. Louis Park off of Hwy 100&394. I've been renting it out for the last few years and would love to sell, but the value has gone down so much. Given that, I know there's a lot of units in the development for sale that you would get a steal on. For the price you'd pay I'm sure you could do your own renovations and make it just like you want it. It's a nice, cozy area, about 200 condos in the development. Depending on where your unit is located, you may/maynot have direct access to a "yard" area, but it wouldn't be considered just yours. No dogs allowed though so not sure if that's an issue. Nice pool area and little playground for the kids. I miss living there.
  • in st louis park, excelsior and grand development is expensive (but nice).  On same block is westmoreland hills (behind trader joe's) and condos are less than 100.  You can buy mine, haven't listed it yet as we're currently installing new kitchen cabinets and slab granite counter tops.  walk to target, trader joe's, movie theater, starbucks, tons of restaurants, bars, tennis courts, seriously nice area, close to uptown and right on 100 if you need to get downtown.
  • Looks like I'm a little late on this thread, but go with Hopkins! It's a cute area, and if you're into bike riding, trails both to south Minneapolis and Lake Minnetonka run right through it. It's got a hometown feel, with a cute Main Street with antique shops and such. I live in a condo in Hopkins. It's an ok condo...but I'm renting it. Did you end up buying? I personally wouldn't buy a condo...I'm saving up til I can afford a house. I don't feel like owning something that doesn't feel so homey. If you're looking to rent in the area, try looking at the rentals at Gassen Companies...these guys are a great company to rent from. They have properties all over the cities. Hope you found a good home!
