  • Very sad and depressing.  It's caused me to re-think finishing my degree for the last year or two.  I have my associates and a great job right now (I'm lucky, I know).  I'm scared about being able to pay back my student loans though.  Tuition is increasing every year and it's so easy for them to just hand out loans that students might not be able to pay back.  I finally decided that the potential to be hired would be better having my bachelors and that outweighed the loans needed to finish it.

    It's still depressing though.

There was an article here in the local paper that mentioned that the loans are essentially free money to the university straight from the government.  Nobody cares about the poor student who will spend the rest of their lives paying off those loans.

  • I am scared to death to pay back my loans. My payments will begin in November and I really hope DH or I will have a teaching job by then.

You should look into imcome based repayment. They based your payment on your income and if you dont make enough you dont have to pay until you make more money. I'm not sure exactly how it works because I make too much to qualify but I have seen that type of payment plan help out a lot of people.

  • Tara-

if you teach in a low income school, I know that there is a replayment plan for teachers that they pay some of it.  I am looking into some of that after the move because I think 60% of my school is low income.

We are paying J's off now, and mine start in Nov too.  I am super scared.

I dont know why I didnt think about that too! I was just talking to DH about it this morning. I know Apple has grants to pay back teacher student loans if the school they teach at meets certian criteria.

  • Aside from enjoying school and always wanting to teach (except for a few years in there) the benefits of these programs make me wish I'd gone with a teaching degree.  I plan to get my Masters in Education but that's several years down the road.

But I hope all of the teachers on our board can find a job that helps them to payback or write off some of their loans.
