Possible TMI

SO now that we are all married and getting this married life thing figured out I thought we would get things going a little spicy. Since I know some of you are still living with parents or people other than your H I wanted to know how do you still keep a sex life?

Since we moved MIL in our house things have gone downhill in this department. The room she is in shares a wall with our room and that happens to be the wall that our bed is on. We have tried it on the floor but that gets super uncomfortable for both of us. And with her not sleeping much at night we need to be as quiet as possible otherwise she will hear us.

And advice or tips on how to keep things quiet and still private?? ?

Re: Possible TMI

  • Thankfully, we have our own 4 bedroom house, so it's not much of an issue.

Is there a way to rearrange your bedroom and move the bed away from the wall?

Oh and for what it's worth, I do not recommend the shower unless you have some sort of seat or really strong grab bars.  We both are still sporting bruises from that grand idea......

  • H and I used to live with MIL, and SIL...so I know how you feel. SIL's bedroom was right next to ours, and she never shut her door...so even with our door shut, she could probably still hear what was going on.

We used to try doing it when no one was home, and of course right in the middle of it, someone would walk in the door and start searching to see where we were (ugh)

Can you re-arrange your bedroom? Can you pull the bed away from the wall at all? Does your MIL ever go downstairs and if so, can you and your H sneak upstairs for a few min? What about the shower?

Is your MIL mobile? If not, what about the living room/kitchen counter, while she is in bed?

(possible TMI....) we found that by having me on my back on side of the bed, with my legs dangling off the side, and H standing up it was still comfortable and also didn't make the bed squeek at all.

  • Oh another idea....not sure if it's warm where you are, but you could get a fan or air conditioner and have that running at night to drown out the noise...even if you keep it on for just the time you need to have your alone time with your H! Or even low music, unless you think your MIL would be yelling at you to turn it down!

  • She is not mobile or at least not on her own. We don't have a downstairs and she likes to leave her door open too. We can try the living room but kitchen is out of the question since it is literally straight down from her room. We aren't so worried about the headboard hitting the bed but more of our bed squeaks. She is always here since obviously she can't drive.
  • Although its not ideal....what about getting a yoga matt or two to create a more comfortable place on the floor. You could even throw your comforter and pillows on top to make it more like a bed....

  • How about taking this time to be spontaneous or adventurous... If you have a backyard, get some sheets, sleeping bag, tent whatever and plan a nice rendevous. Take a drive and do it in the back seat like teenagers. If not, I know its awkward but just do it! Your married, I'm sure your MIL expects it to happen.

DH and i only see each other on the weekends, and with his parents so close we've had to go visit them on the weekends for various reasons.  his mom actually took me aside and told me not to ever feel awkward about 'being with my husband' in their house.  and left it at that...

This past weekend we were there for a visit and had date night Friday night (and i probably had too much margarita) and we came home and did it with the bedroom door open.  Embarrassed  i felt weird the next morning, but DH's like, "whatever, we're married and we never see each other, they have to expect it!"  haha

  • I would try a fan or AC to drown out the bed squeak or the idea of making a bed on the floor?

Wow, that is a super awkward thing to say!  Or at least I'd be super embarrassed if my mom/MIL said this to me, haha.

Do you guys have a basement and an air mattress?  I guess we've never really had this problem.  The only thing I can think of is when H used to live with our mutual friend during dental school.  We came home one night from a formal event (kind of like prom for dental students) and we'd been drinking heavily as per usual.  Apparently we were being "loud" when his roommate and his now wife came home...which apparently was a total aphrodisiac for them, until she fell off the bed and hit her head pretty hard (booze also involved there).

So long story short...like some PPs said, it is normal & expected.  I'd try and keep it as quiet as you can, but I'm sure his mom isn't going to care.  And other locations outside the house aren't a bad idea =]

Actually, it wasn't awkward at all because it wasn't obvious at the time what she was talking about.  We had been talking about me and DH sharing a bedroom after getting married, both of our parents are traditional and we slept in separate rooms when visiting our folks, so that's what i thought she was talking about.  It wasn't until later that it dawned on me that that's what she meant. haha  :)

  • I imagine she doesn't really leave, otherwise I would say whenever she's out of the house! Is she in her room most of the time? Could you try the living room? When we were in college and home on break, we did it in the car a lot. We'd drive to some secluded parking lot at night. Just be careful and don't get caught! Police don't look kindly on this! ;-)

  • I think PP's said it all.  I know when we have had family visiting we've been super quiet (that's kind of the fun part!) and take a trip to the steamy hot shower/bath.  That was actually a lot more fun.  I've have a friend who has her little sister living with them and they have a very small house.  They have figured out little ways to get away and have their time.  They have literally set up camp in their backyard or walked down to the local park.  I agree - be careful on that one!  Take it back to college days and go for a drive!!!!!
