My husband and I are leaving for Australia next week! We are super excited, but we are not booking anything ahead of time as we are flying standby. We are planning on being gone just under 2 weeks. We are planning on going to Sydney and Cairns (sightseeing in Sydney and rain forest and diving in Cairns). Are there any other places we should try to go during our stay? Any cheap accommodations recommendations (we are going to try to stay under $100/night since we will be there during the low tourist season)? What are some must see sights in these cities?
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

I'm leaving next month for Australia - I'm super excited!
I think it's going to be a little more expensive for hotel then you think. I found some locations in Sydney in the $140 range that looked pretty decent. I came across a few $90, but they were special deals. Ultimately, we booked a flat because we wanted kitchen and laundry access. In Cairns, it is a high season in the winter - equivalent to going to Florida in the winter busy.
I have a pinterest board with links to some of the hotels I found & things to do if you want to check out: http://pinterest.com/stephsfavthings/aussie-land-2012/
I can't recommend hotels under $100/night because we wanted to stay in the city center when we were there in November and couldn't find anything in that price range. As someone stated before, Sydney is quite expensive, and Cairns is very touristy so it's pretty split between nice hotels and hostels. Have you tried looking for a place on airbnb.com or something similar?
For Sydney, we enjoyed the harbor cruise (touristy but gave you a great view of the city), a side trip to the Yarra Valley and another side trip to the Blue Mountains.
For Cairns, we're also divers and spent most of our time in the water since the area is rather touristy (it reminded me of Venice Beach). We also made a side trip to the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation which was beautiful but took longer than expected (nearly 2 hours each way).
