Babyfood Question

I was poking around on the Gerber website looking for coupons and came across their "meal planner".

The meals consisted of 1/3 of a tub of X, a tablespoon of Y, 1/2 a jar of Z.

Does anyone actually do that?

DD didn't like purees at all and really wouldn't eat them.  Nolan chows down and easily finishes an entire tub.  He also will eat an entire Plum organics pouch mixed with 4Tbs of cereal.

It seems like so much would go to waste if you were doing a Tbs of this and Tbs of that.  Although...maybe that's their point :-)

Re: Babyfood Question

  • That's the only way I ever fed DD baby food b/c I figured eating the same jar all the time would be boring.  I rarely ever just fed her "one jar" but I would take a little from a few of the jars I had open and mix so that she was constantly getting different flavor profiles and not just "squash" or "sweet potatoes" or "chicken and apples", etc, etc.  I never fed her from jars so you can use them again just like you do any open container in the fridge (it's only when you feed from a jar that you should throw it away in an hour or so b/c the little bit of saliva on the spoon will start to break down the proteins and carbs in the food).  I'd open a few jars and do a mix of this and that...especially if there was something she didn't really like such as Chicken and Broccoli then I would use a little of that with 2/3 sweet potatoes or squash or something she liked a bit more.   Some of her favorite combos:  Squash with green beans.  Vanilla yogurt mixed with applesauce/mixed fruit/prunes.  Chicken and apples with sweet potatoes.  Mangos and yogurt.  Pumpkin apple with Chicken and gravy.

I think the pouches are a waste of $$ so for 2.0, I plan to use the Sili Squeeze more and more and introduce it when we start to do solids.  I bought that for DD last spring when she was 18 months and love it for the car for snacks....it's much easier to give her applesauce or yogurt in the Sili Squeeze than crackers that make a mess.

  • i made purees, and while we were introducing foods I only ever did one type at a time.  And she was onto finger foods by 9 months anyway so she was offered more variety then.

Wow!  I'm impressed.  I never thought about it with DD since she hated purees.  We also haven't started meats yet.  I anticipate doing that in about a month.  And I agree that the pouches are more pricey...but I felt they offered a little more variety with mangos, purple carrots, quinoa, etc.  So I bought a boatload when I found a good deal on them, under .90/pouch after coupons, and I alternate them with the Gerber foods.  So he usually gets one of each at school.

I always liked the idea of making babyfood, but the ready made stuff is so convenient I never ventured in that direction.  Although with the way the little man eats, I should look into it.

ditto this; Jake was on purees longer, but Liam ditched them around 9 months.  I only ever did one at a time, I figured he was getting variety with each meal by serving his different things throughout the day.

Ditto. Made dd's food and did 1 at a time when introducing. And really did a lot of finger foods early in the process so she did end up getting variety that way
