When do I move?

I'm going to be marrying my fiance in May, and moving into his house. He's an architect and actually designed his own home. I love my townhouse, but sadly I cannot keep it, since not only does he have a personal connection to his home but it's also larger. When should I prepare to sell my townhome if I aim to be moved into his place by the time we're married?

Re: When do I move?

  • How strong is the market for townhomes in your area?

Only that type of research can answer your question. If it's a strong market for townhomes, plan on a quicker sale, if not...you could be waiting.

If you cannot sell it, is renting it an option?

  • You know what, that's actually a really good idea.

  • Friends of ours were in a similar situation and they ended up selling his house (large single family). He then moved into her house while they house hunted for a together house. Once they found their new house, they moved in and put her house (townhouse) up for rent. She is under water on her townhouse and the market is weak for townhouses in that neighborhood, so they decided that renting it was the best option. Unfortunately they rented it directly, instead of using a property management company to handle everything, and now that are dealing with a very difficult renter who calls and texts at all hours of the day and night, and refuses to comply with the HOA rules. Renting can be great, or it can be a total disaster. So think long and hard about that option.
  • You girls have given me a very good idea. My sister's had a tough time the past few years and renting the townhouse out to her would really help her out.
