*Spalko* more kitty advice :)

So, Delilah went in a little over a week ago for her second round of dewormer and her distemper shot.

For the last few days, she has been a lot calmer than normal, she usually plays quite a bit at night, and now she is sleeping more. I'm wondering if she is have a reaction to her shots, or would that not be since its been awhile since her shots?

My friend said she may be dehydrated? I've been making sure that she has been drinking water.. I feel like she forgets to eat and drink during the day because she is sleeping.

Or could she just be growing up and out of the kitty stage? She is 12 weeks old today.

Thanks!

A lot of times after kittens and puppies get their vaccines, it can make them a little sluggish for a few days afterwards. Those shots are a lot for their little immune systems to take and they show that by being less active and not quite 'themselves' Keep a close eye on her, make sure she's eating and drinking to what is 'normal' for her and if she still isn't acting right, call your vet.

Are you noticing worms passing in her stool? Sometimes if an animal has worms, it can cause them to be worn out from their sucking the nutrients out of them. If worms are passing in their stool, they are dead so no worries there but continue to keep an eye on her.

Next time you take her to the vet, mention how she acted this time around and they may choose not to do more than one vaccine with her at a time. Typically for the last round of vaccines cats get a final distemper vaccine and a rabies vaccine so the vet may choose to do them a week apart to avoid something like this happening again. Any other questions, just let me know! I'm sure Delilah will be back to herself soon!!

  • I haven't seen any worms in her stool. I have noticed lately that she seems to be burping after she eats? And I think she can taste whatever she is burping up.. gross, I know.

Do you think that is from the vaccines, or the worms? Or should I be changing her food? She has been fine with her food since we got her, so I am puzzled as to what is the problem.

     Thanks so much!

If you aren't seeing worms, chances are she doesn't haven them. The dewormer would cause them to be passed in the stool so if you aren't seeing them she should be free and clear there.

The vaccines shouldn't be causing the burping and I wouldn't expect her to be reacting to them still. Does she eat her food quickly? I know that my dogs always burp after eating because they eat it so quickly and take in a lot of air with their food. If she is eating quickly you can try spreading her food out on a small baking sheet so she can't inhale so much food at once. Is she back to acting like herself or is she still sluggish?

  • She seems to be doing a little better.. she goes in spurts of playing a little and sleeping. She is just playing less than she did a couple weeks ago.

I have never seen worms in her stool, but the vet said that when they test her stool that parasites are in it.. which is why they are giving her the dewormer.

I have been watching her eat, and I guess she eats a little fast. I will let the vet know when she goes in in the middle of July, unless she still seems "off" in a few days.

Thanks for all of your help :)

  • I think I figured it out..

DH and I looked in her mouth, and she is losing her teeth now... so she may be having a hard time eating her food.. causing her not to chew it very well, and it may be trying to come back up sometimes? Or she is swallowing her teeth.

This would at least explain why she is tired/less playful because she isn't eating as much and her gums hurt...

Does that sound like what could be happening?

That very well could be it! When puppies and kittens are 'teething' they can get fevers and not feel well so chances are she's experiencing some of that. She may be swallowing her teeth but they are so small that you don't notice them when they fall out. Hopefully all her adult teeth come in soon so she can be back to her playful kitten self :)
