Help! Moved and trying to change my name
I'm a little confused about the best way to go about doing all of this. I was living in MA before I got married and now I'm living in NY. I bought a car about 5 days before getting married and I could not change my mailing address, driver's license, or anything like that until I had the title for my car, which I just picked up from my parent's house this week. In NY, you're supposed to notify them/get a state driver's license within 30 days of becoming a resident (I've now been here for 36 days). Would it be better for me to just get everything switched over to New York and then switch it to my married name or is it easier to just bite the bullet and switch my place of residence and my name at the same time
Re: Help! Moved and trying to change my name
Start with changing your name on your social security card (you will need your marriage license for this) it will take 24 hours for that to update in the DMV's system so you can't do both in the same day. Also you will need to change your car insurance to NY (you must have NY car insurance before registering your car in NY) then do your car registration and new license on the same day at the DMV. Just a side note in NY you get your license in the mail in about 2 weeks so if you have any flights etc make sure you take that into account.
I just went though all of this a few months ago, got married in CT and moved to NY state 2 weeks later, lots of fun!
In Louisiana, I had my name changed, including returning my marriage license to the Clerk of Court, my license and SS card, done in one day.
If you need to get it done because it's the law, use your maiden name and then go back and do it when you get the proof of your new name.
