Please critique my Costa Rica itinerary

DH and I will be spending two weeks (15 nights) in CR in late August - early Sept, flying in and out of Liberia. We envision a lot of wildlife/volcano/waterfall watching activities, and a bit of beach time at the end. We are considering renting a 4x4 but are also open to shared transfers. So far, I came up with this:

2 nights - Rincon de la Vieja

2 nights - Tenorio/Rio Celeste

3 nights - Fortuna/Arenal

3 nights - Monteverde/Sta Elena

2 nights - Palo Verde or Barra Honda

3 nights - Playa Hermosa

Does it sound reasonable or too busy? What would you change and why? TIA!

Re: Please critique my Costa Rica itinerary

  • having to pack and unpack every 2 days would irritate the hell out of me. but that's me.

if you want it to be so busy leave it alone. did you leave any time in there for a beach day? a relaxing day?

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

yep - that would be the last three nights at Playa Hermosa :)

  • Do you have a transfer company in mind? When I went to CR, most of the transfers I looked at (I wasn't doing the same itinerary as you) required a stop in San Jose first. It added a bit to the trip. So, I would check that out if you haven't already. Also, I had a problem when I went from San Jose to the Arenal area. I don't remember what happened exactly, but our travel time was increased by several hours because of detours and road construction.

I think it sounds to busy overall. I'm not sure what you are doing in each area and I haven't been to all of them, so not sure what I would change.

  • Thanks for your input! I've been looking into transfer options, in case we decide against driving; I don't think our route (from the looks of it) has anything to do with SJ.

I guess packing/unpacking is not that much of an issue for us: we've done a few  itineraries which involved moving from place to place every 2-3 days.

But for a more relaxed pace, I'm thinking we could add the third night to Rincon and the fourth night to the beach, and sacrificing one of the 2-night places...

  • I guess the busy-ness of your itinerary depends on how much travel time you have between the two places. When I went I was there for 10 days and switched hotels every 1-2 nights and staying in one place for 3 nights. It was a bit much for me, but I think it was because the rain followed us (and everyone told me in each city: it's not going to rain, this is uncommon, but don't worry it won't rain where you are next - and then it rained) and the transfers took much longer than I expected. We mostly relied on public transport, though. Funny enough, our longest transfer time was when we prearranged a price with a taxi (from San Jose to Arenal). We also did a shared transfer from Arenal back to San Jose since there wasn't a direct transfer route to our next city. From the looks of it, though, most of your cities are closer together than the places I went so maybe it's not as busy as I first thought.
  • If you are like me and are a go go go traveler, I think this schedule would be totally fine! I have a new requirement that I must avoid one night stays at all costs and as long as that is met, I am usually good. The only thing I might point out is that while distances appear to be short in Costa Rica, they can actually take so much longer than you would expect.

I went to Costa Rica last year with my friend. We rented a car which I highly recommend. I have no idea how much transfers would cost, but I assume it would be much more expensive in comparison to renting a car. My friend did all of the driving while I did the navigation/maps. This worked quite well and we didn't have any issues. It was wonderful to have the flexibility to go wherever we wanted whenever we wanted, especially for tours and meals.

I have entries in my travel blog on Nosara/Nicoya here and La Fortuna/Arenal here.

there was a taxi driver demonstration on the day we wanted to go from the central valley to la fortuna, so our trip was re-routed.  It took us nearly double the time to get to la fortuna.  you just never know what's going to happen!

thankfully, we had transfers to all of our destinations so we didn't need to figure out the directions on our own.

  • Yay - booked the hotels!

    imagedidobas:

Days 1, 2, 3 - Rincon de la  Vieja (Hacienda Guachipelin)

    4, 5 - Tenorio/Rio Celeste (Sueno Celeste B&B)

    6, 7, 8 - Monteverde (Cala Lodge)

9, 10, 11 - La Fortuna (Volcano Lodge and Gardens)

    12, 13, 14 - Playa Hermosa (Villa Belmar)

    Now, for the tours/activities!
