Cupcakes for my bro's bday

I'm making cupcakes for my brothers 30th bday party in a couple of weeks.

His girlfriend suggested Corona cupakes for some of them, which is totally my brothers style, so I'm going to make some of them that way. I also want to make some "regular" cupcakes (prob just vanilla and chocolate) too.

My brother is big into surfing, so I bought a candy mold that is little surfboards and I was going to add these to the tops of the cupcakes but since I think it might be overkill is all of them have these, I'm trying to think of other things to add to the tops.

For the Corona cupcakes, I'm thinkinig about using a lime wedge (or a candy fruit slice on top) then for the vanilla, I'd probably do the surfboards, and for the chocolate, maybe some candy "30s" that I'd make out of melted chocolate.

Does this sound ok? Any other suggestions?

Do you think I should make a small cake too so we have something to put candles in? I could do a beach themed cake (with blue "water" and cookie crumb "sand") or is that going to be way too much cake?

Also, is it all too random (corona, surfing, beach) or does it go together pretty well?

  • 1) Whoa. You are crazy ambitious, and I am loving it.

    2) I think everything would go great together!

    3) I don't think you'd need a cake- Just stick a "3" and "0" candle in a couple of cupcakes.

  • Haha, I love baking. I wish I could quit my "real" job and open a bakery! So whenever I get a chance to make something for someone I go all out!

I agree, the cake might be too much, and we'll just add some candles to the cupcakes. Thanks!! :)

  • I love your ambition!

Corona and the beach go hand-in-hand. I think for the Corona cc, I would use a lime candy slice wedge, not a real lime (might get soggy). I love your ideas! I would run with it and just do the cupcakes, no extra cake.

  • My H is from southern california.  He would say you can't have surfing, beach or corona without the others.  It's uncivilized!

I love your ideas.  Good grief, ambition.  I HATE baking so I am totally envious of you right now....

  • if you wanted to create the illusion of a cake you can frost cupcakes together and then maybe put a 3 0 candles in that....like 4 cupcakes or something...easier then makeing a whole other cake! Something like this but with just 4 or 5 cupcakes?:

  • Please post pics when you've finished!  I'm loving the beach theme and don't think it is too much!
  • I love all of it!! And I love the blue water and sand, I think you should just put blue frosting on the chocolate ones and sprinkle some graham cracker crumbs for sand on them.  You can put a few together and do the faux cake thing, and put your number candles on that...

NO NO!! Put the blue frosting and sand on the vanilla, and top the chocolate ones with a vanilla surfboard (contrast I guess), and then do the Coronas with the lime wedge (I think you should make a lime frosting with this and maybe garnish with a lime rind curl, like what they do for fancy cocktails?).  I might have to do all this myself....  I love baking cupcakes!

By the way, this is my favorite vanilla cupcake recipe.  It tastes like a sugar cookie!  http://allrecipes.com/recipe/simple-white-cake/

P.S. If you use that recipe, do at least 3/4 cup of milk, and be generous with the vanilla extract!
