North Hills School District

We are considering a house in the north hills school district. the school district is important to us. Is this school district any good? I see on some websites it isn't 'ranked' which makes me think that is not good...

Here is the info from the Pittsburgh Business Times

Rankings:

25 out of 104 local districts

89 out of 496 state districts

I would send my kids there.it My cousins all went there, they all went to college and did well.

It isn't as highly ranked as other districts around it (Hampton, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland) but it isn't a horrible district. It is also much higher rated than Shaler Area which is 60th locally and 251 statewide.

ETA: Rankings are only one indicator, a school is what you make of it. North Hills and Shaler are definitely more diverse than Hampton, NA, or PR. NA only offers half-day kindergarten and the district is huge which is a total deal breaker for some people. You need to know what you want out of a district to make a determination if it is "bad" or "good".

According to the Pittsburgh Business Times rankings, they rank 89th in the state. They were 81st last year. http://www2.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/events/2012/school_guide/statewide-ranking-information.html Nearby to NH is North Allegheny which is 3rd in the state. Hampton is 4th. I don't think NH is bad. It is large. We just moved from NH to NA. We were considering both SDs before moving, but found the right house in the right location in NA. Good Luck!!

I'm sending my kids there

As Kris mentioned, they're not as well known as some of the top schools around here (NA, Mt. Lebo, etc...) but they still receive high rankings, have a lot of extracurricular activities, etc... The elementary schools have also recently been remodeled.

good school district! but isn't this the same school whose HS graduation is done over 2 days because the size of the class is 700+?

I think you're thinking of North Allegheny. I *think* (but dont' quote me on this) NH class size is somewhere around 400.

Neither North Hills nor NA "spread" their graduations. They are one evening affairs. Yes, NA has large classes, my youngest sister's was almost 1,000 but it was a single ceremony and was less than 2 hours long including speakers and reading ever single students name. My sister was the 4 to last to be read because she was on student council.

I came out alright I suppose.

NH is smaller than NA but bigger than Shaler and Hampton. We're currently in NH and I have no qualms about staying in the district. Plus the elementary schools all just got complete renvoations, which is nice.

haha, that's what Brian said! He graduated with like, 125. I graduated with around 330 I think, so for him, even seeing that NH graduates around 400 students/year seemed like a lot. He thinks it's so bizarre that on my graduation day, people walked across that stage who I swear, I had no idea who they were. I assured him I was not traumatized by my high school experience, and that our kids would be ok, too.

that's right! it's NA, not NH, with large classes! but my actual point was that the classes for the district are large. if they can manage to squeeze graduation in to one night, kudos to them. it's the part about having 1000 in a graduating class that blows my mind! there were 298 of us and we thought that was a bit too many!

Well, I had around 550-600 but we were the smallest class and then they started going up. I was the first to graduate and Emilie was the sixth and it was 16 years between us.

I will say though, growing up, Marshall and Warrendale were the boonies. I had a couple friends that lived out there and it was a haul to go to their houses, now there are tons of new developements out there which contributed to the massive increase of class size.

This blows my dh away too. I actually met someone in college and it ended up we actually graduated from high school together. Dh was so weired out by the whole thing.
