Very vocal cat

I adopted a beautiful kitten who is now about 1 1/2 years old.  She was spayed and chipped before leaving the humane society and also we had her front paws declawed about a month after we brought her home.  She has always been a very affectionate and well-behaved cat.  She has always used her litter box and has never destroyed anything.  She has always "talked" to us and every night when I get my blanket out on the couch to watch tv, she knows that it's her time to come and snuggle.  However,  for the past 2-3 weeks, she has started some really odd behavior.  She has been meowing in a way that she usually does when she looks for me or is calling for attention.  She always slept through the night or atleast played out in the living room and we'd never hear a peep from her.  For the past few weeks she'll sit on our window sill and cry and make really odd calling sounds.  She'll do it during the day at the door if she wants out on our porch so we let her out, she's out for a little while and then calls that she wants back in.  It's not constant but enough that it has gotten really annoying esp. when it's at 3-4 am!  I've been googling when my co-worker suggested maybe she's in heat.  But as I said before, she was spayed over a year ago and the vet commented on her last visit about her scar tissue that she has from it.  She doesn't spray her urine or even get in the position with her rear end up in the air that I saw when I googled....she's just been meowing like crazy and I can't seem to figure it out.  Her bowls are always stocked with food and water, we give her a little canned food at dinner time and her toys are in the same spot they've always been.  Nothing has changed in our house so I just can't seem to figure this out so we can try and stop it atleast during the night.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Could she really be experiencing some symptoms of being in heat??

Re: Very vocal cat

  • Take her to the vet and see if this is a physical problem (ie infections that could be painful) or if it's just behavioral. The vet should be able to give you some tips.

  • I would suggest taking her to the vet. there are several medical issues that could cause this change in behavior. One of which could be her coming into heat. if she was properly spayed that should not be the problem, but leaving a piece of ovary happens sometimes. especially in very young kittens.

  • Do you know if there are other neighborhood cats in the area? Our tuxedo cat would meow and meow all the time! We found that even tho he was neutered, his instincts to be outside around those cats were still very prevelant. It was not until we moved to an area with no other cats around did it stop. Maybe consider a kitty door?
Sorry that most of my jokes are borderline inappropriate. And by sorry, I mean you're welcome. Cait_S
  • We have a Turkish Van, very vocal already, but he gets worse when his litter box is dirty or the next door neighbor's outdoor cat gets out and taunts him. He also gets louder and more persistent when he has a hairball or a urinary tract infection. Take kitty to the vet stat. Please.
