Toddler portion size is apparently the size of their hand.

M did not get the memo. he is having a scrambled egg with avocado and a 1/4 cup oatmeal at this very moment.

Re: Toddler portion size is apparently the size of their hand.

  • Ive also heard that the toddler portion size is 1 TABLEspoon per year of age, so DD can have 2-3 Tbsp of a certain item. At some point, that clearly changes because Im sure Im not allowed to have 31 Tbsp of something, but I assume between about 1 yr old and 4 years old its pretty valid (obviously also using common sense good judgement on the portion size of junkier food).

  • Yeah, there's no way that would be enough food for my kid who eats a ton of food. I don't know who these portion sizes refer to, but they don't work for us!

So does he eat smaller more frequent meals or he just likes small meals in general? We do 3 meals a day and 2 snacks but I literally don't know what other people do bc I feel like she's always eaten a lot.  How are his allergies? Is he expected to outgrow any of them?

Also, hope my post didn't make you feel bad. It's just the way both our kids are, kwim?

  • i know we don't do snacks so that might be why he eats bigger meals

I've found snacks help her from becoming ravenous between meals and help keep her blood sugar up. She also naps better when she's had a snack. So for instance she'll eat breakfast at 8:30 then she'll have a piece of fruit like a banana around 10 or 10:30 before her 11 am nap.

Then she'll get another snack around 3:30 like a pear or some homemade applesauce or even a hard boiled egg then some milk afterwards. This will hold her over for dinner which sometimes can be 5:30 or 6.

    depends on his mood/the day/the weather/who knows.

Daycare does breakfast, snack, lunch, snack.

Our pediatrician said he should be having 3(ish) meals and 2 snacks. She also said as long as he gets the equivalent of one good meal a day, he's fine. But the truth is he eats small amounts sometimes, and other times he'll eat everything in sight. (more often it's the former)

As he's becoming a stronger willed toddler, there's quite a bit he won't eat. last night his dinner was 2 bites of peanut butter on toast and 1 honey wheat pretzel.

  • Yeah ravenous isn't how I would describe m's eating. So in thinking for us no snacks is okay. He still gets breastmilk too so that's as snacky as we get.

oh, and re: allergies-we haven't tried anything with egg again. The pediatrician said that we could try something baked with egg but we haven't. I just keep forgetting, and since I always keep a stash of vegan muffins in the freezer for him, we're sort of used to being egg free.

We also don't do snacks, unless you count the occasional bribe type snack (squeeze in car, bunnies in the shopping cart).  He has milk in the am, breakfast around 9, lunch around 12, sleeps 1:30-4:30, milk after nap, dinner.  I truly have no clue where I am supposed to figure snack into that.

Although maybe milk s the snack?  I refuse to do milk at meals -- he does great with water and is a really great eater.  I am afraid if he had the option of milk he would shun ther stuff.

And LOL at the portion size -- this kd eats easily an adult portion of veggies twice a day.

  • Emma is in that portion size. Honestly that is way more than she eats sometimes. She is more like Meldot's son eating wise. She does do 2 snacks. She probably eats most of her nutrition in snacks. Although sometimes she will pound an egg, banana, and some Cheerios in milk and act like she is still hungry. Don't understand. :-)

See, when the kid is with the in laws she doesn't nap 3 hours a day so she'll eat an afternoon snack for sure on those days. When she's with us she'll nap for 2.5 hours or so from 11-1 so she'll prob get a snack on those days.

I'll do milk as a snack or after a meal. Never with or before a meal bc she gulps it and it fills her up.
