Wisdom teeth removal
Hi everyone. I am 22 years old and need my wisdom teeth out. 3 need to be removed (1 upper and 2 lower). The upper is fully exposed and straight. Both of the lowers are in at a 45 degree angle so the top half is exposed. I had my wisdom tooth consultation with the oral surgeon and he prescribed me 5 5-mg Valium, and said to take 2 the night before and 3 an hour before the surgery (and of course have someone drive me) so my muscles will be nice and relaxed and it will be easier on both of us. I'm not sure whether he plans to give me novacaine and gas when I get there, or only the valiums. Now my question, I'm not a big person (5 foot, 135 lbs), and I have an incredibly low tolerance when it comes to alcohol (no experience with pain meds), that seems like A LOT of valium to take in a 12 hour period. I'm not particularly nervous about the surgery, I'm more nervous about the valium! And he told me to take 5 days off of work -- I think 3 at the most would be necessary. Anyone have experience about this? Thanks!

I had three removed also, one straight and two impacted. I had it done on a Friday and went back to work on a Monday. I wasn't prescribed anything beforehand. I was just knocked out with an IV. It sounds like they're just going to use novocaine on you, and keep you awake, but relaxed. If you don't want to be awake, you should call the doc and ask if you can just be put under all the way. If they say yes, ask if you can avoid taking the Valium. I had to take Valium before Lasik surgery, and it made me REALLY loopy and sleepy. I felt totally drunk and it was only one 5mg tablet (I don't take anything like it normally, and I am 5'5, 150lbs).
Afterward, I had dry socket in the two impacted areas and was in a lot of pain. If three days passes and you're in a lot of pain, call the doctor and go back. They put these little strips with clove oil in the holes and though your mouth will taste like a Easter ham for a few days, it's worth it. And DON'T use a straw when drinking!!
Is conscious sedation during the procedure not an option? I got IV valium, propofol and fentanyl during and all went well. I don't remember a thing. Went back to work 2 days later. A little puffy and still not eating hard stuff, but totally doable.
