Does disinfecting cleanser damage anyone's hands?

My fingers almost look like they're covered in paper cuts or that I raked them across a cheese grater (though fortunately the skin isn't open anywhere)!  I've had this happen before and blamed a new lotion, but I was using cleanser extensively this weekend in preparation for a garage sale, and my dominant hand that I scrub with is much more affected.  Thoughts on whether the cleanser is to blame?

I could wear gloves, but I find those make it hard to maneuver.  Can anyone recommend a gentler cleanser or thin gloves that you hardly feel?  Thanks!

Re: Does disinfecting cleanser damage anyone's hands?

  • What kind of cleanser do you use? I have extremely sensitive skin so I tend to always wear gloves when cleaning, I do use clorox bleach or Mr. Clean now and then and when I do I wear Playtex Living gloves (small-purple) just to help keep most of the bleach off my hands and I've never had problems with not being able to clean while using them.

Also a great lotion to use that has no scent and will help heal your hands is Eucerin Dry Skin Therapy Plus Intensive Repair Hand Creme....amazing stuff! If your hands are really bad I would put the lotion on before bed then put an inside out sock over each hand.

  • I use the Method line of cleaning products and don't have a problem with it tearing up my hands. Most times I use gloves from the hospital to clean with. I would try something thin like those as opposed to the thick cleaning gloves they sell in the stores.

  • I am allergic to certain ingredients that are in most commercial cleaners.  When I use commercial cleaners, my skin gets very red and will crack.

Because of this allergy, I use white vinegar or a baking soda-hot water paste for regular cleaning and a chlorine bleach solution for deep cleaning. Never mix vinegar and baking soda because that would release a toxic gas.

  • Vinegar, baking soda, Method products and Mrs. Meyers products have never caused a problem for me. I have sensitive skin (eczema) and I never use gloves to clean.

Vinegar will do the same thing as a commercial disinfectant or bleach and it won't damage your skin.

  • Thanks so much for the suggestions, ladies!

  • How about vinegar? I was reading it makes your hands soft and is a great cleaner.
