Moms of 3 year olds

Can your 3 year old identify letters by looking at them? The whole alphabet or just certain letters?

I feel like it took Cooper forever to learn his colors, and he still mixes them up sometimes. He knows them, but when I ask him to name a color he says the wrong one on purpose. Little snot. I've caught him slip up a few times and correctly call a certain color, so I know he knows them... but he won't say it to me if I ask.

ANYWAY.

We were working on letters this morning because I'd like him to start practicing writing his name more often. He had no clue which letters were which when I asked him, but then I thought back to the color naming situation and thought maybe he was just acting out a little. IDK.

So, just wondering, how many letters your 3 years old knows and can identify.

Re: Moms of 3 year olds

  • Connor can't do the whole alphabet and he'll be five in 3 months, so yeah, I think you're probably ok. He can write his name, but he also refuses to play quiz me on the ABC's so I feel ya on the inability to gauge where they really are.

I definitely don't think you have anything to be worried about yet and one to one comparisons will only make one parent worry needlessly (whether it be you or the other parent).

  • B knows all of his letters, but has zero interest in writing them without tracing.  I'm not worried about it.  At his 4 year well check, the pediatrician wanted to make sure he could count to ten, knew his basic colors, and knew most of the alphabet so that he could do an eye test.  C is right on track, don't worry about it.

  • It sounds like C is doing great. I always want to compare what M knows to other kids to see if she's on track. I wouldn't worry about it too much it sounds like he has a great teacher. Smile

  • You might consider picking up the DVDs called "Meet the Sight Words." We used these - they aren't *that* annoying - but SD learned her alphabet and how to read QUICK with these DVDs. They also come with fun little books so we would work with her on the actual books at bedtime.

  • JJ knows all the letters and can identify them individually - and I seriously think that's because we've read the Dr. Seuss ABC book about a million times. But he's a lot like Cooper in that he knows his colors but says the wrong ones on purpose. He's just now started to show an interest in tracing letters though.

Cooper's probably fine. A lot of the kids in JJ's preschool class [almost all are older than him] are still learning their alphabet as well, and numbers.

  • Sam can do most of the alphabet but he's obsessed with words and letters and has been since he was a toddler. I wouldn't worry. I'm sure he's right where he needs to be. :)

  • I'm not a mom, but my 3 year old cousin (who [whom?] I keep often) knows all her letters and colors... and she counts but often skips from 14 to 17 or something like that. But, she's also constantly around kids who are older... so she kind of models herself off of them. Does that make sense? Also, she's a girl... girls tend to pick up on those kind of things sooner than boys.

At the same time, my 5 year old cousin, who also spends a lot of time with me, still struggles with his letters... even after spending the school year in pre-k.

So... I think each child is kind of case-by-case. It's hard to compare when all kids come from different types families and backgrounds. I wouldn't be too concerned at this point...

  • Conner can recognize his letters and some sounds( but definitely not on the regular with phonics). He can spell/recognize his name and Carson's name, but I don't even practice writing with him. He'll be in 5 day a week preschool next year, and that's soon enough to be forced into book work.
