not married yet so i probably shouldn't use my married name...

i'm an admin assistant/receptionist for a child care company.  the company itself is an average size but the admin office i work in has about 20 employees.  i've been here for a few months and will leave in feb 2013 when my contract is up (i'm covering a mat leave).

i was asked to order some name plates for new employees or those that had a title/name change...and i was told to order myself one.  i ordered one with my married last name because i'm going to be using it at work after i'm married; plus, this job may end up being permanent (there has been talk of it).  i feel silly using my name plate that says christina f****** right now because i'm still christina y*******.

so i guess the reason for this post is to confirm : yes, it's not appropriate to have a name plate with my married name.  my fiance said nobbody would even notice the last name anyways, so i should use it.

thoughts?

  • When's the wedding? I only ask this because if you're getting married in a few months then who cares it'll just get you use but if you're getting married next year it might be pushing it a little. He may not notice last names but some people do and that can look a little weird. So I guess it all depends.

  • I wouldn't change it just yet only because it is so much fun to change everything when its official. There is none of that strange feeling that you have now. When you change it, even on your desk, you will want it to be all pride and glee that you are Mrs. F**********!

  • I wouldn't change anything until it is official and you have the paperwork to back it up.

  • I'm getting married in exactly 4 months.  I'll be changing my e-mail address and asking for my name to be changed in our phone system a few days before the wedding so I don't have to do it later.

it would be fun to stick that name plate up when I'm actually married, though:)

  • I don't usually post, but I thought I would weigh in.  I ordered new business cards with my married name about a month before my wedding.  I needed new ones and my company orders them in 1,000 batches.  I wouldn't have used that many in a month!

  • but if you're leaving in February, you'll be at that job longer unmarried then married....I guess this is a name plate you get to keep?

  • According to your ticker, the wedding is about 4 months away.  I would have ordered it with your maiden name.

Because of how fun it is I would use it right after the wedding. If you have to have it up before then, it shouldn't matter. It's gonna be your new name soon!! Congrats on your upcoming wedding!!

  • I started a new job about a month before I got married. Where I had the choice I used my married name because I knew that changing my name would be such a hassle and the less I had to worry about the better. That being said, with a physical thing that people see everyday like a name plate, I think it would have made it extra special the next day back from getting married to be able to pull it out and plop it hard on my desk and gloat a little non verbally about how happy I was lol.
