Talk to me about baby wraps/slings.

I keep seeing women wearing their tots in a sling, and I'm thinking this would be good for Gabe. I'm not sure if it is an actual sling, it looks like a giant scarf wrapped in various ways around baby and mom. Is that a sling? Or something else?

Did you have something like this that you loved? Can you give me a recommendation?

I do have a hand-me-down Bjorn, but as I've said in previous posts, it kills my back and I'm not sure that Gabe enjoys all the pressure on his crotch.

Re: Talk to me about baby wraps/slings.

  • I have a this sleepy wrap that I like.

  • First, when I read the title, I read it as "talk to me about baby wasps" and initially, I didn't feel I could contribute anything to the post.

I don't know anything about baby slings either, but we have an Ergo carrier, which we were happy with.  we've barely used it for Liam, but Jake was much more high needs than Liam is, so it was perfect to have for him so that I could carry him and get stuff done.  You can wear him facing in on the front, or back carry.  I can't remember what the weight limit is, but it's pretty high...like you could haul a toddler around in it, too.

  • I preferred the structured carriers to the wraps (I was paranoid I'd wrap it wrong!), so I got this carrier: http://www.amazon.com/Infantino-Union-Ergonomic-Carrier-Gray/dp/B004FMAMNY/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340824647&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=evenflo+ergonomic+carrier and we still use it even now. The Bjorn was torture on both our backs, but this one is pretty decent! Also, a blogger I follow is big into wraps, I did a search on her blog and here are her posts about them (she's tried a ton): http://www.themaidenmetallurgist.com/?s=wraps
  • I too was intimidated by actual slings...but I did venture into baby wearing with a Babyhawk mei tai.

It's easy, adjustable, can be worn front or back, and I can still actually wear my 3 year old with it and it doesn't kill my back.  We had a Chicco structured carrier with DD and rarely used it because it was so uncomfortable.

If we were to have another kid I would get the ergo for sure. I had a money wrap with dd and while I used it quite a bit it was a giant pain in the butt to wrap and just wasn't practical to take out and about

  • I tried the Moby, the Ergo, the Bjorn- I hated them all.  I would highly recommend going into a store and trying them first!

  • I have a Boba 2G that I LOVE.  I can still carry Parker in it without it hurting my back!  I also have a ring sling that I used when Braden was very little.  Though I could still use it, I don't because it's just not practical for me and it digs into my shoulder since he's so big.  I also have a Baby Bali Breeze that I am in love with.  I used that thing soooooo much.  I could still use it, but I just haven't.  wrapping is tough till you get the hang of it.  I also have a Sleepy Wrap that I used on both itty bitty babes, and I would use it again in a heartbeat...in the fall and winter.  It's just too thick a fabric to use in summer.  Oh, and I have a mesh ring sling that I used in the water with Braden.  It was awesome when we went to Splash Lagoon and I could just get in and out of the water and cradle him in my arms without picking him up, putting him down, etc.  I also had a Bjorn early on with Parker (before I knew what I was doing)...and I would never use that again.  HTH!  I love babywearing!
  • I also liked the Sleepy Wrap. I still put Wes in it sometimes when I vaccume.
  • Sims was crazy high-maintenance and he would pass out immediately when we would use it as a newborn.  We have a Maya wrap, which I liked more, but it wasn't what I really wanted and then I scoured Craigslist for an Ergo and finally found one for a reasonable price and rarely used it. I think now Sims might not be interested in being back held.

  • Thanks everyone, there's so much to consider! I'll be following up with some of you.

I have a really bad back. I fear I may have lumbar arthritis so it doesn't take much to render me useless. I'll be posting some follow ups! Thanks so much again. You ladies are so helpful.

  • I bought a Beco Gemini through www.paxbaby.com  I liked it a lot.  I don't use it too much anymore, but I could.  It didn't hurt my back, but it is tiring to wear.

PaxBaby will let you rent carriers, which may be a good option.  She is also good at answering questions, so she may have a suggestion for a bad back.  I did love wearing S when he was small and snuggly!

  • Hi I'm new to the nest and just saw this post.  I have two older boys and am waiting for my little girl to be born in November.  I used an soft structure carrier for my first son and  wrap and softy for my second son.  The wrap made me a little nervous because I felt like my youngest was going to fall out and the other carrier kinda hurt my back.  My friend told me that onya carriers were made for moms with back problems.  I got one and I love it!  The first couple of months of this pregnancy I would carry my youngest on my back to go on walks with no back pain.

  • Thanks, all!

I ordered a water sling and the Boba 2G, they should both be delivered today. I can't wait to try them out.
