Dog's starting to get fussy about what he eats:(

I'm having a tough time getting the dog to eat his food -- I put little slivers of things that he loves and ordinarily those did the trick but not anymore.

He'll eat, but only finish about 4/5 of his food. He leaves the rest behind.

He's acting fine but this has been going on for about a week --- it's about time for his checkup anyway; I'll mention this to the vet as well.

Re: Dog's starting to get fussy about what he eats:(

  • It could be a medical thing, but if he isn't losing weight, maybe he's just getting older and doesn't need as much food anymore?

  • What is he eating?

I'm asking the same question as PP - what are you feeding the dog? Is it high enough quality? Maybe he just needs a switch, or a switch to better quality food.

  • I don't tolerate picky dogs.

If he has a complete health workup and is a good weight, I would just keep an eye on things and make sure he doesn't drop weight.

If he is just being picky, I always pick up our dogs' food after awhile, anyway. Dogs won't starve themselves, and will eventually eat.

  • One of my dogs is like this too, but he's been like it since we got him so it doesn't worry me.  I have to mix a bit of wet food and water in with his kibble to get him to eat.

If this is new behaviour for your dog, it's a good idea to get him check-out.  He could have a minor intestinal infection or something that can be easily treated.  Or maybe he's just developed a sensitivity to his food and needs a new diet.  Your vet will be able to help.
