My long weekend

So on the weekend I went home (to my mom's) because she is selling her house and moving and wanted help cleaning out the garage. My dad passed away in December, and the only one who knew where everything was in Dad's garage.... was Dad. I discovered something this weekend.... my dad was a PACK RAT! Now not like out of control should have been on hoarders pack rat.. but like... "Oh.. i'll hang onto this random....screw....empty container....old door handle.... insert any random thing here... just incase I ever need it!"

It was kinda fun going through some things.. we found a bunch of antique stuff that H and I got to keep and we're going to put up around his shop when we get it built. The best find that we got to keep, I think, was these OLD fire extinquishers... they're brass and you have to pump them. Very cool.

My dad's uncle who lives on the farm came to pick up a few things and his daughter was helping us clean as well. I feel mildly bad for his daughter becuase he took all the containers of screws, bolts, random crap that he MIGHT just be able to use somewhere! haha from one family pack rat to another I guess!

We also go this old pellet gun, but what was super cool about that was the leather case it came in. When my dad was little my grandpa was quite sick and couldn't work, so he made leather goods. I"m fairly certain he made the leather case that the pellet gun was in and it's BEAUTIFUL. We got to keep that.

Funniest thing we found? My dad was a salesman for an automotive battery/alternator/starter company. My uncle (his brother) owned the business and was the mechanic, my dad was the salesman... before he passed away, he had surgery (complications from the surgery are ultimately what killed him). Anyway, i'm crouched down on the floor, and look at my mom and go "Hey, did you know there's a battery under this shelf?" Mom goes.."No" So H bends down and starts pulling it out.. then laughs.. becuase he pulls out 2 tractor batteries, 2 truck batteries, a car battery and a motor cycle battery. Now I can only GUESS that he cleaned out his truck before his surgery and figured he'd take them back to the shop after he was better. But really! lol

It was a little sad at moments, but also therapeutic/kinda neat to go through all of his stuff and see what he'd kept and what he had.

H and I also got his basically new BBQ (only a couple years old on the condition we bought my mom a smaller one to replace it), a filing cabinet and a lawn mower. All very helpful stuff. Mostly just because my mom is downsizing/moving into a condo. She won't need the lawn mower, and currently her neighbour is cutting grass for her and the BBQ is big and she'll never use it for just herself.

I just felt like sharing with you guys... helps me a little. H has been SO great through all of this.

Re: My long weekend

  • Glad to hear that it was a (mostly) helpful experience instead of a totally depressing day.  Sorry again to hear about your dad.  Hopefully with time my SIL can get to the same point your mom is at - she's thinking of selling her house now that our BIL passed away.  I know I've been wondering how she would even be able to go through all of his stuff...she's having a tough time now but this gives me hope that there will be a brighter day for her!

  • My grandfather grew up on a farm, and although he moved out when he got married, his younger brother continued to live there until his death. It wasn't until then that our family decided to sell the far which lead us to go through soo much stuff! Like 20+ lawn mowers... my grandfather grew up during the great depression so they never got rid of ANYTHING in case it was to be needed for parts or anything. But it was definitely interesting to learn about my grandfather's childhood.
