crochet hat help!

I am making chemo caps for toddler age children. I know how to make the shape of a billed hat I am just not sure how to measure for it. for instance my hat has a circumference of 17 inches how many inches long would the bill need to be? I cannot find anything on the Internet and I don't have a baby to measure on. is it safe to say the bill takes up 1/3of the circumference of the head?

Re: crochet hat help!

  • I just wanted to clarify I'm speaking of the type of bill similar to a visor or ball cap bill not a brim that you would roll up on a regular beanie
  • 17" may be a little small for toddlers- the average 12mo girl's head is more than 18" in circumference (just an FYI, since you mentioned it). It really depends on the style of hat you're making- 1/3-1/2 of the circumference is about right for the styles I see on Ravelry (there are quite a few free brimmed hat patterns there if you didn't think of it).
  • thank you! yea I'm kinda lost as far as sizing for babies and such. I made my own hat pattern and then just used measurements off a sizing chart. I made the circumference 17inches and depth about 6.25 inches it's going to charity so as long as those measurements work together some one will fit it. I went ahead and tried 1/3 and it looks pretty good! I just wanted to make sure because there is nothing more annoying than a hat brim in the way! :)
