Argentina Nesties: Driving from Buenos Aires to Mendoza?

We will be traveling in August through Argentina and then Brazil. Currently debating if we should
a) rent a car from BA and drive to Mendoza with a brief stop in Cordoba.
or
b) Take the Bus from BA to Mendoza and rent a car there to explore.
We realize many fly from BA to Mendoza but the cheapest flights we have found are $600 r/t pp, and that is not in our budget for now.
Any advice/suggestions you can give are most welcome!

Oh my god, TN just ate my post. Long story short, I would bus it because buses in Argentina are nice, and driving on unfamiliar roads in unfamiliar countries for two straight days does not sound like my idea of a good time.
I am also surprised flights are that expensive and wondering if it's worth checking again - they may have just dropped because I plugged in a couple random Aug dates and was seeing $300pp (out of AEP, not EZE, maybe that's the difference?).

Thank you for your suggestions! H and I think we've finally figured out what we'll do. We are going to take an overnight bus to Mendoza, first class tickets you get recliner seats. And will then fly back via Cordoba to BA. We need to be in BA on a certain day to then fly to our next destination - Brasil. So although it will be a bit of an adventure we think this is the best route to go in terms of time and budget:) I'm sure I'll have a lot to blog about.
