WTF weirdo neighbor

We just moved to this neighborhood about 6 months ago and don't know anyone on the block. I've noticed this crazy old man who has a sign out on his lawn that says "Slow Down". Driving by this guy's place before I've noticed crazy man also has this giant plywood sign (it's at least 6ft by 6ft) in his carport/lean-to. It looks nicely painted and has a huge message about slowing down because there's X number of kids living on the block.

I am normally careful about staying around 25mph when driving. Apparently old man speed-trap didn't like how I was driving today because he left a poster board on my driveway that says in big handwritten letters "SLOW DOWN! It's 25 on this street. Please be considerate." The only thing I think I did that could've pissed him off was driving to work this morning. I wasn't paying attention so I must've hit 30-35mph. Nothing out of control. IT WAS 6AM AND A HOLIDAY. NOBODY WAS OUT.

But creepy old man was apparently watching from his window, ready to call me out with a passive-aggressive note. I want to send it back and write on the other side "DON'T LITTER and stay off my property."

WTF. We let the cops park on our driveway to set up speed traps.

Oh my gosh!  I read this outloud to DH.. his comment "Oh I'd confont him!"  That's crazy.  I'd keep going about 30 by his house just to irritate him.  :)

  • I know! I think he needs to calm down a little, but if it really pissed him off how I drove he should've come over, introduced himself (since we've never met) and then mention his schpeel about the speed limit. Either that or leave me a note in my mailbox explaining it instead of a stupid sign. I hate passive-aggressive shiiiit.

It's so tempting now to drive by going 30 just to piss him off.

  • That's so weird. Who does that?!
  • Wow, that's just crazy!

  • We have I e of those across the street. He watches out his front window 24/7. When I was about 8 months preg we had a very early flight to catch and left the house around 4am. When we returned he told ushe had thought it "was time" since he saw us leave with suitcases at that hour. It's kind of nice to know someone is watching, but creepy at the same time.

He also called in a complaint on MIL for parking on the street in the wrong direction day. I'm fairly certain she does this often, and since it mil, I don't really care, but if it were me I would have been annoyed.

He also gives us all kinda of vegetable from his garden. He can be sweet but also talk your ear off and offer tons of unsolicited advice about needing peepholes and screen doors.

Moral of the story: old dudes be weird sometimes.

  • I think every neighborhood has at least one. We have 2.

One morning I was coming home from work and weird neighbor #1 proceeded to stand in the middle of the street, scratching his balls, knowing damn well H and I were trying to go down the street. We seriously had to blow the horn to get him to move. I was tempted to run him over, but H talked me down. A few months later we officially met and coincidentally he is the uncle of one of the guys I work with. He told me to call him Uncle JOhnny. Um, no thanks.

Weird neighbor #2 is the old lady that lives next to us. Every time we go out the gate to our house she's poking her head out the door with this peeved look on her face like we're disturbing her. Maybe if she closed her front door every once in a while she wouldn't hear everyone in the neighborhood leaving. Last year we had our immediate families over for a BBQ and my brother's car was parked like a foot in front of her house. She proceeded to put a note on his windshield that said "park in front of your own house". He wasn't blocking her driveway and wasn't even on her grass. However, the best had to be her telling me that my dogs bark too much. I'm sorry, they're dogs, what are they supposed to do. And the only time they even bark is when the mailman comes around, along with every other dog on the block. I asked her what she'd like me to do and she just stared at me. I can't even take her seriously.

  • That is a bit much with the sign in your yard. I get leaving a note on the door/ in mailbox but a sign in the yard? Is he trying to make you a target of all the neighbors? Or maybe the neighbors saw it and thought "Uhg, he is at it again".

If this happened to us H would hold a grudge. He would rev his engine and peel out all the time just to get on the old guys nerves. This is not hard to do in a manual while still being in the speed limit.

Why are old people so crazy? Maybe they have nothing better to do.

  • Wow. Some people are just bored. Honestly, if I get to a point that people parking in front of my house is irritating to me, I hope I move to the country where I can be all alone. People like that shouldn't have neighbors.

  • Ha - I used to have a neighbor when I was at my parent's that was annoyed with my dog and told my dad that we should surgically have his bark altered! This was a neighbor that left his windows open while he was loudly having sex with whatever girlfriend of the week came by. Puh-lease. My dad told him to go to hell. LOL

I do have an annoying person that moved in with the family next to us now that always parks in front of our house. They have a huge driveway and garage, but I guess they don't park any of their 5 cars in there. I think he got the hint that we were getting annoyed as he parks in the space we need to put our garbage out at weekly and now he is parking further up the street at an apparently abandoned house. Thank you. Now my guests can park there when they come by! But getting mad at one incident for a party - no - that's not a big deal.
