Keeping the cat out of the trash

We have a small trash can in our bedroom. It usually only holds tissues and paper. Several times a day our cat will knock it over and play in it. Any ideas on how to keep her out of it? Keeping the bedroom door closed is not an option.

Re: Keeping the cat out of the trash

  • Put it in a closet?

    Get a lid for it?

Weight it with a rock in the bottom?

Redirect her with more appropriate toys?

In my experience the squirt-with-water trick only works when you are present.

  • I would try getting a lid for the trash can or just removing it since it isn't used for much.  My cat doesn't get into things too much but when she gets fixated on something, she won't leave it alone.  I've tried spraying her with a water bottle but she likes water so it's not really punishment for her.  Good luck!

  • We had a dog like this. Had to just remove the trashcan from reach. Good luck!
