Re: Poll: TV

  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)? Comcast

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? I'm not sure what it is for tv alone since we have a bundle with internet and phone.

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? Hard to say - some days I'll watch 2 or 3 hours while I sew and other days I barely watch 1/2 an hour.

Are your TV habits different than DH's? Yes, he watches mostly sports while I watch a ton of shows. The only show we really watch together lately is House Hunters.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? We stream Netflix but I don't like it. I liked the choices available with the DVD's better. It seems like everything I want to watch isn't available on streaming.

Do you have a DVR? Yes  If so, how much do you use it? For everything except DH's sports.

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? No

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? N/A If so, how often?
  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)? We currently have Dish but are considering a change to none of the above (hence this poll).

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? $77

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? 8-10. This is much lower than it used to be!

Are your TV habits different than DH's? Not anymore. We watch TV together in the evenings before bed.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? Yes, through Netflix.

Do you have a DVR? If so, how much do you use it? Yes we do, and we would be lost without it. We watch live TV approximately never. It's always DVRed stuff or Netflix.

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? No, but this is what we're looking into as an alternative to Dish.

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? If so, how often? We put Sesame Street on for DS maybe a couple times a week, maybe less. He only watches for the songs.

  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)? We have FIOS and love it.

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? I have no idea!

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? Maybe about 10 give or take a couple.

Are your TV habits different than DH's? Yes...we have several shows that are "our" shows but we mainly like different things. Fortunately, we still hang out in the same room (I surf the internet or he plays a handheld video game) for the most part.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? We have Netflix but don't use it nearly as much as we should since we pay for it.

Do you have a DVR? If so, how much do you use it? I don't know how I ever lived without DVR. It's the best thing ever invented! I DVR a ton so that I don't have to watch commercials or so that I'll always have something to watch during down time. I DVR House Hunters a ton so I can zoom through an episode in about 12 minutes.

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? Sometimes Hulu if I miss something.

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? If so, how often?Bailey wants nothing to do with TV, which I am grateful for but there are moments when I need to get something done and I'd give anything for her to be transfixed by the TV for 20 minutes. Nope...doesn't happen.

  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)? Fios

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? We've got a bundle with internet and 2 DVRs and it's $130

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? Depends.  Now that it's summer probably 10.  During the school year much less.

Are your TV habits different than DH's? Absolutely!  Thus two DVRs!

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? Nope

Do you have a DVR? If so, how much do you use it? Yup  Pretty much everything we watch is DVRed.  I'm weeks behind on most of my shows.

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? Nope

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? If so, how often? Aiden gets 30-60 minutes a day.  If he gets 60, it's usually a show in the morning and a show while I make dinner.  He never gets 60 in a row.  I have a bunch of shows taped for him to watch that are kid-appropriate.

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? DH works for Comcast, so nothing

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)?  I would guess around 10

Are your TV habits different than DH's? most of the time, I typically like the stuff he watches (sports, action movies, etc), and he does enjoy some HGTV, but there are some shows that we each watch the other really dislikes

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service?  no

Do you have a DVR? If so, how much do you use it?  we used it a few times a week 3/4

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc?  rarely

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? If so, how often? Maybe an hour to two a week, it's mainly in the morning while DH and I are getting ready, running around the house, but it doesn't really hold his attention, he will watch for 5 mintues then go off and play in his room or play on the iPad

  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)? Comcast

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? We have the bundle of phone, internet, cable, one dvr box, for $157.00. We called Comcast two weeks ago to deduct some things from the bill and instead we got HBO and Stars for no extra price.

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? Maybe 10

Are your TV habits different than DH's? He watches sports, discovery and some other random shows.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? No

Do you have a DVR? Yes If so, how much do you use it? All the time. I hate watching anything live.

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? No

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? Yes, If so, how often?Annabelle will watch about an hour a day, but most of the time she doesn't really pay attention. It's usually in the morning that I let her watch, when we are trying to get out the door.

What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)? Fios

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? My husband pays it, plus it's bundled with internet and landline (which we don't use). I think it's $130 a month, which seems too high to me considering we don't have DVR/movie channels, etc., but DH swears its as low as it can go.

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? Too much. Way too much. If I'm at home, the TV is on.

Are your TV habits different than DH's? He watches more sports, but that's about it. We're both big TV watchers.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? We have Netflix and Hulu Plus, and we use both of them frequently. Our downstairs TV has wifi, so we can watch netflix and hulu on it, and upstairs, we have an Apple TV, so we can watch them there, too. I frequently consider telling David to cancel cable and just use that, but apparently it wouldn't save us that much since we'd still need Internet.

Do you have a DVR? If so, how much do you use it? no

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? Yes, though mostly Hulu these days.

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? If so, how often? N/A
  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)? We have Verizon FiOS. We had Comcast for the first 4 years we lived in our house and eagerly counted down the days until Verizon was available. Loathe Comcast.

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? For phone, internet, multi-room DVR, and TV we pay $190. I need to cancel the landline and trim the TV package. It won't save us a ton, but the bill makes me gag. My husband actually says he doesn't want to know what we pay because it makes him so stabby.

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? Now that it's summer and so many shows are on hiatus, it's reduced, but I'd be embarrassed to actually add it up. I'm a total TV Junkie.

Are your TV habits different than DH's? He almost never watches TV, so yes, drastically! He watches True Blood, Glee, and The Walking Dead. Otherwise he'd rather play games on the computer or watch streaming on Netflix.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? Ha! See above :) We do have a Netflix account, streaming only. E and M make use of it - I never do. We've toyed with the idea of canceling cable and just using Netflix, a paid Hulu account (we only have free right now, but we'd upgrade in this instance), and an Apple TV box. I <3 TV, though, as referenced above, and I'm not sure I can handle the switch.

Do you have a DVR? If so, how much do you use it? Yep, and every.single.day. It's very rare that I watch anything live, and when I do, I get so aggravated with the commercials. With M's bedtime the earliest I can sit down to watch something is 8:30, so I'd miss the start of a lot of shows.

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? Only when I miss an episode for some reason and can't access it via OnDemand. I have a free Hulu account, but it just doesn't get much use right now.

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? If so, how often? Yes, she watches about an hour to an hour and a half a day during the week. I used to feel guilty and cut it back even more, but it's a nice way for her to wind down in the evenings when she's been on the go and active at school all day. On the weekends she may watch more, depending upon what we have going on, the weather, etc.

  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)?
Comcast which I hate.  We've had nothing but problems from them.

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? roughly $250 but that's for the bundle package of cable, internet and phone.

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? During the week maybe 2 but on the weekends I catch up with my DVR'd shows so I watch many many hours.

Are your TV habits different than DH's? Yes, we have 2 DVR's because I love shows like Real Housewives and he likes shows like True Blood.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? No

Do you have a DVR? If so, how much do you use it? We have 2 and they get used pretty much every day.  I have a deep love for Bravo and most of the shows on that channel.

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? No

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? If so, how often? Only about 10-15 minutes in the morning.  That's the only way I can finish getting the diaper bag packed and put stuff in the car.  He watches the very end of Barney, the wake up Jeff song by the Wiggles and the opening theme song to Thomas the Train.  That sequence is how I know I'm on time.  If I'm not ready to go by the time Thomas starts I know I'm going to miss my train.

  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)? Comcast

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? For Double Play (TV/internet) with HBO and Showtime, we pay $122/mo.

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? Probably around 15, way too much.

Are your TV habits different than DH's? Yes, he only watches sports really, and I hate sports.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? Netflix and HBO GO sometimes.

Do you have a DVR? If so, how much do you use it? Nope, OnDemand is enough.

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? Sometimes when it's slow at work I'll watch the latest ep of a show on a  network site

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? If so, how often? No kids

  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)?
    We have Comcast

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? $203 for 2 HD DVR boxes, a regular basic box, movie channels (HBO, Starz, Cinemax, Showtime) phone, and internet.  Don't ask me how we wrangled that...I let DH do the complaining!

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)?
It varies based on the day and what's on and if any good games are on but I'd say probably about 20-25 hours a week, including weekends.  I almost always watch the news everyday though so that's 30 minutes to an hour.

Are your TV habits different than DH's?
Yes!  We both watch football and baseball games but DH follows more teams than I do.  He also watches other sports too and occasionally I'll sit and watch an NBA game or golf tournament with him but not all the time.  He also watches more series type shows where as I watch more talk show/sitcom type shows.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service?
Yes, we have Netflix and love it.

    Do you have a DVR?
We each have our own since we watch different shows

If so, how much do you use it?
    Everyday!

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc?
Rarely.  The only thing that comes to mind is the HBO and Showtime apps where I'll watch something if I am commuting to/from work on the bus

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? If so, how often?
n/a...but whe we have kids, I plan on letting them watch tv but putting time limits in place

This is what BIL & SIL did and I originally thought it was just another example of their over-frugalness (pretend that's a word). Cancel TV? Crazy. But now DH is suggesting it and given how our TV habits have changed in the past year, it honestly makes sense. But, it makes me nervous to just cancel satellite. And then it makes me feel stupid for being nervous about losing TV!!!

I know, I'm sure my husband thinks I'm insane for clinging to my TV so strongly. And I probably am. God knows we'd save a shitton of money if we canceled cable all together, but it's my escape at night after the kid is in bed! And I cannot imagine the upcoming sleepless newborn phase without some mindless TV to keep me going at 3am.

I do know people who have made the switch and are entirely happy with their decision. They can still watch the stuff that mattered and are less likely to waste time in front of stuff that's just on 'cause it's on.

TBH, during my maternity leave, we watched Netflix exclusively (and excessively). We had shows we watched together, shows just I watched, and I'd pick a mindless sitcom that I'd already seen to play when I just wanted to have something on. And actually we just found out that Dish Network dropped AMC which is one of the few channels we were worried about missing out on. So we may cancel TV after all - as insane as that sounds!!

  • What TV service do you have (Comcast, FiOS, Dish Network, Direct TV, etc)? FiOS

What is your monthly charge for TV (if you want to share)? We have the bundle of phone, internet, cable, one dvr box, for $150.  By the time all is sad and done and you include a few on demand movies and taxes, its about 170/mo.  I think that's insane since we only have 2 TVs w/ boxes, one w/ a DVR and no premium channels.

How many hours of TV do you watch per week (approx)? 2 hours at night, weekends vary, sometimes none, sometimes 5 hours.  Average maybe 15 hours a week.

Are your TV habits different than DH's? Totally.  He watches all kinds of Myth Busters, Through the Wormhold type stuff, NFL network, plus Tosh and other stupid stuff.  I'm all Housewives, E, HGTV, etc.

Do you stream TV shows or movies via Netflix or another service? No

Do you have a DVR? Yes If so, how much do you use it? DH uses it, I rarely do.  I feel weird recording TV shows, my feeling is its just TV, if you miss it, you miss it.  Alot of stuff is on demand now, and if its not, whatever, I can catch it another time or not.

Do you watch TV online via network websites (ABC, NBC, etc), Hulu, etc? No

If you have kids, do you let them watch TV? Yes, If so, how often?  Ella watches about an hour a day at night.  While we are getting dinner ready or before I get home.  We watch America's Funniest Home Videos together after dinner most nights.
