My husband and I are re-locating to New England from Alaska to be closer to family. When should we start looking for employment? Before we move? Or after we arrive?
Re: When to start applying?
What can you afford to do? Could you go a few weeks (hopefully no longer than that, but who knows) without a paycheck if you waited to apply for jobs? If I were in your situation I would at least have some applications out before moving in hopes of setting up interviews as soon as we were settled in the new area. I personally would not feel comfortable being unemployed more than 1-2 months, especially if both H and I were jobless.
ETA: I totally don't expect you to answer/post anything on here about your financial situation, but it is something to think about.
It is good to apply before you move (when you start to do so is your decision). You do not know how long it will take some companies to get back to you for an interview. Then if you do not get a job before you move you just keep applying once you get there.
If you are not in a rush to get a job because finances are ok you could wait. You could start networking once you get there and maybe find job leads that you wouldn't of otherwise.
I agree - Start applying before you move. I've put in applications, and they've called me 3-4 weeks after I put my application in. I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable not having a job. I also wouldn't want to drain my savings either.
