Sams Club Membership

Hi, I was wondering what everyone thinks about Sams Club.. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth buying a membership. I'm an avid couponer and I know they do not accept coupons, so I'm really trying to figure out if the membership + their pricing will actually pay off.

Any input would be great, Thanks!

Re: Sams Club Membership

  • Sometime yes, sometime no.

Costco and Sam's are both places you need to know your prices and if you are going to use bulk or have somewhere to store it. They are definitely often cheaper on produce, meat, fish, frozen items but rarely on paper towels, toilet paper, laundry soap. But then there is the other stuff: lawn & garden, seasonal items, clothing, books, cameras, tv, appliances, etc where their pricing is often better.

  • Ditto Kris.  We buy a lot of our meat at Sam's, and a few other things are priced so much better.  (Claussen pickels are $5 for a big giant jar and it's $4 in the grocery for a tiny one). We also buy trash bags there - and they last about a year.   But, you just have to be aware of pricing.  We definitely get our money's worth of the membership, I think.
  • Agree with PP.   We use our Sam's membership for a lot, and one of the main ones is gas. We also buy paper products, and stuff for the dogs which can be a huge savings over the regular grocery store or pet store.  You need to know your prices, but I would say the membership is definitely worth it.

  • We love Costco - especially when they do their coupons (that's when I get my Tide, Downy, Bounty, Kleenex, vitamins - all last me around 4-5 months); meats are EXCELLENT; some of the frozen foods; diapers/wipes; block cheese is around $5 (would cost you $8 or more at the grocery store); etc.

The key is not to bring my DH - he tends to buy things he "needs" but really doesn't need, if you know what I mean!

SO TRUE! I used to buy Costco's Nature Domain dog food (grain-free food comparable to Taste of the Wild but $15 cheaper a bag) until our bulldog went on hunger strike. Anyhoo, if I went alone I could go in, get dog food and water and be done in 10 minutes and be out spending under $40.

Take the husband, 2 hours later, $200+ spent and a cart full of things I never knew I needed!

Seriously!  He goes there more than I do and he always finds something we "need".

  • I have pretty much become addicted to Costco and really do a majority of my shopping there.  Like everyone else said, you have to really learn the prices and know what is a good deal vs. the regular grocery store.  I have been a member for years and I still will go down an aisle and see a product that I just bought for at the grocery store for almost the same price but under half the quantity!

If you do shop there frequently, I would suggest getting a premium membership.  Instead of the $50 membership fee it is $100 but you earn cash back for all purchases.  They guarantee a check of a minimum $50 at the end of the year, so really you don't pay anything to "upgrade".  The most you would be "out" is $50 which is your charge for the regular membership anyway.  The difference is that $50 is just the starting point. In May or so when I checked what my account was at for cash back (they can check at the register) I was at $140 already.  So I have already gotten my whole membership for free essentially and made $40 back in cash.  But the key is that I use Costco for a lot of things- food, toiletries, dog supplies, tires, gas, even Christmas gifts and whatnot.  So my cash back really adds up.

Side note- I do think they may have just raised the fee to $55/$110 for memberships but to me it is still totally worth it.

  • I'm an avid couponer as well so I really pay attention to quantity/amount compared to the price. I would never purchase toilet paper, paper towels, etc from Sam's as I know I can always get them for a lower price when they're on sale and I have coupons. I typically purchase water, Gatorade, some meat, some produce, cheese, trash bags, snack items for DH's lunch, some frozen items.

Just don't go in thinking oooooh I can get this much for this price. They like to make you think it's a good deal. If you break it down, it's often not for some things.

Even being 30 minutes away from the closest Sam's, I still believe my membership is worth it.

  • We use our Sam's Club memebership we buy all our paper products there and we drink alot of bottled water which we also buy there.  As long as you pay attention to the prices and are aware of what you pay at your regular grocery store vs their prices is is definitely worth it.  We also have found that their prices tend to be better for stuff like laptops and some software.
