Down Under

We are heading to Australia from US in December of this year for an anniversary trip.  We plan to see Sydney, Melbourne, Ayers Rock and Cairns.  We've read a few travel books with recommendations, but I also wanted to see what people here had to say.  Any places or adventures not to miss?  Any and all thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

Re: Down Under

  • Absolutely, do not miss diving at the Great barrier reef.
  • Sounds similar to what I did 12 years ago ... Cairns for 2 weeks, then Alice Springs/Ayers Rock, Darwin and Sidney.

Cairns: I enjoyed taking the reef teach class in town before doing a snorkel day trip on a catamaran. They teach you about the sea life you will see on dives in the area. Did a day trip to see the rainforest area, platapus, etc. Museum in Cairns on aborigibal culture is interesting and informative.

Alice Springs: Ayers Rock (i hiked around it instead of climbing it. i was concerned about the incline and the aboriginals prefer we not climb it as it is sacred to them.) Hike in Kings Canyon. I took a backpacker trip (3 days) where you camp out under the stars. They provide tranportation, guide, food and you can rent a sleeping bag.

Sidney: I only had one full day there. I got the unlimited off-on bus/trolly ticket and saw as much as I could but it was a drizzily day. Tour of the Opera house, The Rocks (original settlement area).
