Our adopted rescue dog is a hound mix and is a little under 2. We have had him for 3 weeks now and he has a knack for wanting to learn. He has made such great progress in walking without pulling on a leash, being calm with the kids, etc. He adores his crate and uses it as his safe place when he feels afraid or things get a little chaotic. Since he has a tendency to try to bolt with an open door, I will crate him when I know people will be coming in the house. Today, my sister in law came with her 2 kids who have met him before and have always been gentle and calm with him. He was in his crate and something freaked him out. He started to growl and all of his hackles were up.
What would your advice be to do when this happens? I didnt want to let him out of his crate not knowing how he would react, but on the flip side felt a bit like I was punishing him keeping him in there for giving us warning that something was not right with him. After a few minutes passed, his hackles went down and the growling stopped and was replaced by what I think of his typical friendly behavior. I cautiously let him out and he was totally fine. The kids were petting him in a calm gentle way and he was enjoying it. We are going to start obedience classes at the end of the month, but I was wondering what you guys would suggest doing when this happens? Thanks!!
Re: advice on dog behavior?
Can you explain the story a little more in detail?
He was in the crate when your sister and her kids came over? Did the kids go over to the crate, lean over it, peer into it, etc? Were they carrying anything that they don't usually bring? Were the kids running around or being louder than normal?
