Family Medicine or Internal Medicine?

So, employer switched health insurance plans again.  Current providers are not in network so that means I'll be looking for new doctors, once again.  I have been seeing doctors who practice in Family Medicine.  But was wondering what the difference between Family Medicine and Internal Medicine, and if I should be seeing a doctor who practices in Internal Medicine.

I've done a basic internet search on the differences between the two but wouldn't mind hearing other folks advice or suggestions.

I am relatively healthy and have no children.  TIA

Re: Family Medicine or Internal Medicine?

  • Family Medicine docs typically see patients of any age (kid through adult).  Internal Medicine Docs typically just see adults.  I personally see an Internal Med doc but my sister is in residency for internal medicine and peds so that she can see all ages.  It really is just a matter of finding someone you like.  I can say that there are no sick kids in the waiting room with me when I have to go to the doc which I do sorta enjoy.  I love kids but when I'm not feeling the best, I don't always want to put on a "oh, it is so much FUN to see the doctor" face for their benefit.
