food/lunch storage containers (for kids and adults too)

Does anyone have a recommendation for a website or brand of "safe" containers to store food?

We use the take & toss containers (and sippy cups) but I don't know how safe they are in the microwave. They are BPA-free but who knows what else is in them (they don't say anything about phthalates). We heat up food in glass containers at home, but I know at daycare they just use the plastic ones in the microwave.

Are there any safer options? Is there a brand that you love? I was thinking of getting these for packing cold lunches (won't work in the microwave though):

  • Are these an option?  The smaller ones are not heavy at all. I think you can even buy them individually at Target.  I recently got a set of these with a gift card I found from my bridal shower, and I love them.  We are trying to eliminate all of the plastic in our home also.

  • I only use glass containers - yeah, they are heavy but I am moving away from storing any food in plastic.  I use these by Pyrex. They still have plastic lids (BPA free) but I never microwave them.

If you want to steer clear of all plastic, there are a bunch of stainless steel ones like LunchBots on Amazon but they are obviously not microwave friendly. I keep a plate in my desk so maybe you could do that?

  • Oops, just reread your post and realized this is for daycare so obviously the plate suggestion won't work.

Can you ask them to microwave on paper plates?  I know it's not as 'green' but it would work if you didn't want them to microwave plastic or if they don't allow you to keep a plate there.

Thanks everyone for the ideas! Never thought to go to the Container Store!

Jen, good idea about the paper plates. I'll ask them about that. I'm thinking I'll get stainless steel for when he takes cold lunches, then ask them to heat on the plates (they may already do this...I just never asked).

  • If they are willing to wash, maybe buy a piece of inexpensive china like fiestaware from Kohl's and keep it at his daycare.  This way they can heat his food on that without wasting the paper plates.
  • E, Wegman's has a series of them. I'll check for you and take a picture. I know one of them is a "bento box" style. The other is a "tiffin" style. I belive the bento box is bamboo and the tiffin is stainless steel.

I'm too paranoid about microwaving tupperware and would go for the fiestaware or ceramic plates, if at all possible.

  • My daycare has a no glass policy, so all plastic for us.  I have the take and toss and just picked up a few more containers I found at TJMaxx.

  • pottery barn kids has a divided option in glass. I'm totally going to check out wegmans later today and see what they have. I also emailed a local store like an hour ago to see what she has, I think it's greenfamilyliving.com and she's in Media.
