need help with creating a faux sandbag bunker

Hi all- I tried to search the board and didn't find anything about this...

Any suggestions for making fake sandbags? We're doing a boot camp theme for VBS this year (vacation Bible school) and we're decorating the youth room like a bunker.

Obviously I don't want to buy sandbags (they're too heavy and expensive), so we had thought of sewing burlap sacks and filling them with something cheap- so far I've thought of rice, corn feed, and packing peanuts. They need to look real and heavy.

Any ideas? What would you use?

  • You can probably get big empty sacks from the grocery store if you ask them.  Filling them with rice would be expensive.  Realistically sand is one of the cheaper options for you here, or you could use newspaper or packing peanuts?  You can get bulk sand at dirt/home garden centres.
