Frustrations.

My friend's fiance is in the Guard and recently told me that I wasn't strong enough to be an Army Wife, that I don't have what it takes to be there for my husband if he decides to join the military.

His conclusion, of course, was based off my friend's opinion of me. Her reservations for me are because I'm actually taking the time to research what a military lifestyle would be and what it would mean for the both of us that I wouldn't make a good Army wife. She knew him for a month before he deployed and really doesn't understand everything that comes along with being a military wife. Yes, she's going through a deployment now so she's really jumping head first into the lifestyle... However, he lives two hours outside of where we live and she didn't spend any good amount of time with him before he left.

So, for me, going from having my husband here every day and then having him completely change the dynamic of our relationship by throwing the military in there - how am I wrong for researching this so we can make the best decision for our relationship?

I know this is more of a rant post than anything, but I couldn't believe that I was being looked down upon for researching this. I know that with the Reserves and the Guard there isn't much in the way of an FRG to where I would be getting a lot of support from the military itself. So why wouldn't I be researching such a big decision?!

Re: Frustrations.

  • So she knew her FI for a month, he left for deployment and is still gone on this same deployment?  Yeah, I wouldn't take their opinions on the military or relationships any more than I would take them from a 16 year old "in love."

  • Thanks for listening to me vent, guys. =)

  • DO NOT SWEAT IT!  It's a big commitment, sure, his joining the military, but it's not the end of the world.

My husband is Guard, and he was active Army for several years before we were married, so I knew getting in what the deal is.  It's not as bad as you'd think.  We do have good FRG support her in IN, and his deployments... he is getting deployed next year for the first time since the wedding, and he'll be gone for 9 months.  We haven't really been apart all that much, and with internet, cell phones, google chat, facebook... we're never really that far apart.  It's weird, his being away, and it's lonely at times, but it's not unbearable. (Besides, I really do love it when he comes home!)  It's probably more difficult with kids involved, but for now, just the two of us, it's been okay.

Building a network of friends and family and becoming a part of the military family connection are big helps in getting through - finding things to do and ways to keep communication not only as constant and staying connected are key.

You can do it if he can do it.  God only gives you what you can handle.  :)

  • It's official! He's getting sworn in a week from today!

We met with his Guard recruiter yesterday and settled everything. I'm a little nervous, of course, but really excited for him. He's so happy!

Thank you for all of the kind words and support.
