I posted this on the D&R board, too!
So- I opened a window today
(less than 2 years old, vinyl replacement window- and there were
hundreds of ants under the sash!! Completely disgusting & they are
definitely carpenter ans (some with wings, some of the big giant black
ones, etc) DH sprayed some bug killer/ant killer into the window- but
that didn't take care of all the ones under the sash. I did open it to
place some Terro Liquid Bait under the sash.
Should we let the Terro do it's job & hope it's a fluke or should we call an exterminator to make sure there isn't a huge problem??
Thanks!!
Re: Carpenter Ants??
my read shelf:
I HATE ants!!! So I would call an exterminator just to be on the safe side. We have had odorous house ants on our property since we bought our house so we are on a seasonal contract with an exterminator. I don't know what I would do without him because I can't stand those little suckers!
Good luck!
I still don't get why they were in the VINYL window. it was disgusting! After I posted this, I checked again & the terro killed most that were under the sash. I cleaned them up as best I could & found there were all stages of life. We probably hadn't opened this window in a week bc of the heat- and we do normally open it from the top down. It had probably been two weeks since we had opened it from the bottom up.
So I cleaned the windows like a mad woman and spent a while killing all the straglers. Then I sprayed the heck out of the outside of our house with ant/spider poison (along the base of each window & all entrances). I also put more Terro in the window wells of both of our front windows (they were only in one window, though).
My brother (who installs windows) said sometimes vinyl can have a wood filler core as part of the insulation... so I e-mailed our window person to see if ours do.
I am still disgusted thinking about it!! Of coure all this happened just as DH was leaving to go play music at a bar
