Well ladies, today I was laid off and I have mixed feelings. I was with the company about 2 years and some people I will really miss, but in all reality I don't think there was any career path there for me in the future. This is my first layoff and DH has been super supportive, even took me to lunch when I came home. Luckily I will get some severance, but DH is self employed so I'm feeling a little stressed about the financial situation esp since TTC is the goal at the end of the year. I'm debating how to tell my parents as they worry so much but I tell them pretty much everything and can't hide it from them ( I know I'm almost 31 but I still feel like a kid when I talk with them).
Any advice? Thanks all!
Re: Laid off....
My Blog
So sorry to hear! I got laid off 3 years ago, and while it really sucked at first, I took the opportunity to figure out what I really wanted to do next. Don't feel ashamed to take unemployment money, it's there as a safety net and part of why you pay taxes. I decided in that time to start my own business, and glad I did because I'm still doing it now, and doing what I really love. I recommend reading some books about careers/success/business and figure out what direction you want to go in next. One that I really liked was 48 Days to the Work You Love by Dan Miller, but there are lots out there.
And as far as your parents, just be honest. Being laid off doesn't reflect badly on you, you just have to remind yourself the difference between being fired and being laid off. Of course it sucks either way, but I'm sure your parents love you and will be supportive of you in this tough time. We all want to make our parents proud, of course, but sometimes we fall and it's out of our control. I'm sure they will be understanding.
*hugs* just take a minute (or a week) to breathe, and then you can focus on your resume and figuring out what's next. Best of luck, and feel free to vent/ask questions, etc. here. I know it sucks, but you will get through this.

I'm sorry to hear it CC, hugs to you! My best advice is to try not to worry, take it one step at a time. And definitely take some time to evaluate what you want to do next. Hopefully the next opportunity will be bigger and better! I understand the parents worrying angle - my mother still loses sleep over me sometimes and I'm pushing 36. When you do tell them, I would follow up the news with whatever plan you put in place, so give yourself a little time to absorb it and make that plan.

I'm sooo sorry to hear that! T&P coming your way!
As far as talking to your parents, maybe come up with a temporary plan about work to lay on them, such as offering babysitting services, before you talk to them.

I'm so sorry. I had the exact same thing happen to be a month ago, so I empathize. Keep your head up and get right back out there. I was amazed at how many wonderful opportunities there were out there, all of which were better than my last job! So glad to hear you have an interview lined up already. I went through a recruiter and found an excellent opportunity. Might be worth your time to look at recruiting agencies in your area.
I'm so sorry to hear this! It will likely be a blessing in disguise. These things happen for a reason, and it sounds like you have a great support system. Maybe it's a way to get you into a job that you love before you start your family and get tied to a job just because you need the money!
Best of luck with your job hunt. Don't be ashamed or embarrassed to file for unemployment. Situations like these is why that money is there!
It sounds like you are already well on your way to getting back on your feet. Like everyone has said, hopefully this is a blessing in disguise for you, and will lead you to a better opportunity!
Best of luck in your job search, and try to relax and enjoy a little time where you don't have to go to work every day!
