Been on a cruise? What was your favorite

and why? What is more important, the locations traveled to, or the cruiseline/ship itself? What is the best time of year to cruise (where the water is the calmest?)

Re: Been on a cruise? What was your favorite

  • Personally, I feel like all the ships are basically the same unless you go for one of those new, big mega ships or sail Disney. We've been twice (different itineraries/lines) in the Mediterranean, once in the western Baltic, French Polynesia, and Southern Caribbean. I think the locations are much more important than the cruise line. We select our trips based on that and whichever cruiseline it happens to be is fine.  All of the trips have been so different. It depens if you like culture and sight seeing (Egypt, Rome, Greece, Barcelona) or nature Iceland, Norway, Faroe Islands, etc.), or beach lounging (Tahiti, Bora Bora, Aruba, St. Kitts, etc.)

To me, the locations are definitely more important.

My favorite was Antarctica, hands-down, because it was such an incredible experience, the passenger makeup was younger and more adventurous, and I like the expedition-style cruising.

Of traditional cruises, I think my favorite was East Asia, because there was so much variety between the ports.  Also, it was on the Sapphire Princess, which is a lovely ship.

Time of year obviously depends on the ports.  Some places like the North Sea can be rough all year.  Other places are relatively calm.
