Cruising: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka?
Has anyone been to the cruise ports in these places? If so, what are the must sees? Is it possible to go on your own without a ship excursion?
Re: Cruising: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka?
Singapore
You can get around Singapore easily on your own. Their transit system is efficient, and the cruise terminal is fairly central. I would highly recommend the Singapore Zoo, and I also enjoyed the orchid garden.
We had more time in Singapore because it was our disembarkation port, and we stuck around for a post-cruise visit. The aquarium on Sentosa Island is okay, but I was generally underwhelmed by Sentosa. Instead, I'd suggest sticking to the city and exploring the cultural districts (Little India, Arab Street, Chinatown). Even though you'll be visiting India, I found it interesting to see the Singaporean take on it. ...And I found one of my favorite suits at a shop in Singapore and when I got a bunch of compliments on it the next time I was in India, I had fun telling them that I bought it in Singapore (when everyone was expecting me to tell them which part of Bombay it came from).

Malaysia
Completely depends on the port.
If you're in Kemaman, do a ship's excursion. We got lost trying to take a bus to Kuantan, and when we got there, there wasn't too much to see/do and the ship had fully booked the boat trip we were planning!

Thailand
Again, which port? Laem Chabang? I read too many horror stories about people missing the ship trying to get from Bangkok back to Laem Chabang, so we opted for a ship's excursion. We considered their "Bangkok on your own" option which was just transportation from the port to the city, but it was so expensive that for just a bit more we could do a full-day excursion. So we did that and visited the Royal Palace, took a boat trip on the river past some of the temples, and watched a dance show over lunch. We chose the excursion with the Thai lunch over the "international lunch" and the food was delightful!

Our travel plans fell through, so we never made it to Sri Lanka.
