European Vacation in October

Hi! I'm usually a lurker, but H and I are booking a trip to Europe for the last two weeks in October. We are staying in London for a few days with family that is there living while on business. We then hope to go to Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. (This is not for sure, yet) I wanted to get suggestions on things to do, places to stay, even other places to go because they are not set in stone yet. Thanks in advance!

Re: European Vacation in October

  • With 2 weeks I would do London and Paris (and MAYBE Amsterdam)....it will give you more time to really explore/get to know the cities.  I went to Frankfurt a few years ago because it's where my great grandparents lived and I was not all that impressed....it's a very business-centered city and I feel like your time would be better spent elsewhere.

  • Unless you have a reason to go to Frankfurt, I'd cut that out. I think the London, Paris, Amsterdam trifecta is fine.

As for suggestions of what to do, where to stay... what do you like? What's your budget?

  • I would skip Frankfurt too.

Amsterdam: We stayed at the West Violet B&B in the suite (downstairs) http://www.westviolet.nl/index.html. We liked the availability of the kitchen at any hour and the stock of breakfast items. You have to make breakfast yourself but the flexibility of anytime was great. We made sandwiches to take with us for the day to maximize time for seeing the museums. We also brought take away dinners in from small neighborhood storefronts.

I recommend the iAmsterdam card f you are staying several days - includes admission to most popular attractions/museums (just not Anne Frank house) plus unlimited rides on trams. Includes a canal tour also. It says only one of two companies but Iwas able to do both. Lots to do in Amsterdam.

RyanAir has crazy flight deals in October, so my European travel in October is usually on a whim of what's cheap!

One year we flew into Prestwick and rented a car to drive around Scotland for a week.

Another we flew to Brussels-Charleroi and then drove to Luxembourg to go wine tasting.  (We'd already been to Brussels and Brugge.)

  • I will echo the previous posters and encourage you to visit just London, Paris, and Amsterdam. Try to spend five days in both London and Paris and then the other four could be spent in Amsterdam with a day-trip or two (i.e. Delft, Haarlem, etc). There are so many things to keep you busy in London and Paris that even with five days you still won't be able to see everything!

I've been to all three cities but currently have only a blog entry on Paris here. Be aware that the blog entry covers my third visit to Paris so not all of the main well-known sights are included.
