Where to go in Europe with a baby?

DH and I are both Americans currently living in Scotland with our 7 month old DD. This October we would like to go somewhere preferably sunnier and warmer than the UK. We have 7-9 days and have not been anywhere in Europe outside of the UK. We both love the outdoors and history, but also would need something that would be suitable with a 10 month old. Any suggestions? TIA :)

Re: Where to go in Europe with a baby?

  • I'm American, currently living in Germany. There is soo much to do here, you could spend a week alone in Berlin. If you like castles, Garmisch would be the place to visit. Its about 5hrs from Frankfurt, right by the alps...very beautiful and not far from Neuschwanstein (the castle that disney based the Cinderella castle on). There are also a couple of other castles down there. You can rent a car or take the train but the train can be a hassle with a baby. As long as you have the stroller, you should be good to go with the baby. Most of the cities are very baby friendly. If you want more info let me know! I've been here almost 2 years so I'm glad to help.

  • Thanks for your response. Germany sounds beautiful and I like the idea of visiting Berlin for half the time and then renting a car and visiting Garmisch. Neuschwanstein castle is on my must see list too! Is October in Germany a good time to visit?

  • If you hope to experience warmth in October, then I would recommend Italy, Spain, Greece, or Turkey. With the amount of time you have I would recommend a homebase (Rome/Barcelona/Seville/Madrid/Istanbul would be all great choices) and then do day-trips from there. With a baby I would highly encourage you to rent an apartment wherever you go so that you have more space. We rented an apartment in Rome through Rental in Rome which I blogged about here. There are also plenty of apartment rentals offered through VRBO and Homeaway.
  • We lived in London and my son was born there, we took him on a 12 day trip through Portugal (Porto, Tui) and Spain, the Galicia region, and it was fabulous!

  • We spent 3 weeks in Madrid when DD was 11 months old, and loved it!  Retiro Park, the Zoo, and just wandering around downtown.  El Escorial was cool too!

  • Thank you all for your input! It was much appreciated. All these suggestions sound great, it will be hard to choose one :)
