mold in basement

So we have a house offer that was accepted and we know there is some work to be done....we are aware that there is an area in the basement that has mold growing in a closet.  We had the inspection yesterday and had a sample of the mold taken in for testing...so we are waiiting to hear back on results.  My question is has anyone else experienced problems with mold and how easy is it to resolve?   The house has been empty for over a year because it's a foreclosure so we know the house has been closed up and no air has been moving through it.  We plan on getting 2 dehumidifiers down there and seeing if that helps and if we move in....provided the mold isn't toxic then we plan on gutting the basement to get rid of any mold spores still down there.

HAs anyone had a mold test come back as toxic mold?   What are our options?  It's in a small contained area of a closet under the stairs so I don't think it is all over the basement......just wanted some thoughts on this.......the house is awesome aside from this and we are willing to put the work in it to make it our forever home

Re: mold in basement

  • The home that we are in contract had mold in the basement. We wanted the home so the sellers ripped out the baseboards and the lower 3 feet of the wall and installed mold resistant sheetrock. Hopefully this will help.

  • I bought a forclosure that had mold in the basement (and in the house, but we planned to & did gut it, so wasn't a big deal). Basements are prone to mold... Almost all basements have some level of mold, some worse than others, some fixable & some not. You should assume that you're going to have to rip out that Sheetrock and replace it at minimum, but I would be more concerned about seeking out the SOURCE of where the dampness that is causing the mold is coming from.  Of you can, Bring in a contractor or excavator to see if they can help you find the source of the water, and how much and if it is fixable

For example, we discovered the source of our moisture was water seeking through the rock slab foundation in the crawls space portion of the basement. When it rained heavily we would get a puddle. There was no way to stop it coming in from the rock (without destroying the entire house) so instead we dug a channel inside to create a barrier between the finished & Unfinished portion, essentially creating a creek bed for the water to run out , with a drain pipe to the outside. Works like a charm. Total excavation cost was like $1000, well worth it given the savings we got on the house. 1.5 years later the finishef portion of the basement is dry as a bone

  • Depending on the types of mold found can vary greatly.  Many homes actually have a presence of mold, however they are not a health risk.  In this case you can try using dry lock paint to prevent further mold growth.   In the event the mold is a health hazzard remediation can be extremely costly.  If you have further concerns I suggest having your home inspector conducting a test for the severity of the mold.  Best Wishes!
