What are your fav Boston restaurants?

I should state reasonably priced restaurants b/c we love a bunch of the steakhouses in Boston but will be skipping them with the kids.  We used to work in Boston but it has been many years.

Here are a few of my favs for others who might be going to Boston

Legal Seafood, I know many do not like it b/c it is now a chain but we still love it even if they do not give you a lobster tail in your lobster bisque anymore

While it is certainly not reasonably priced we love Finale's for dessert

And for right outside Boston:

DH loves New Bridge Cafe in Chelsea for steak tips

And we used to love getting seafood at the little shacks across the street from Wollaston Beach in Quincy

Re: What are your fav Boston restaurants?

  • LJ I will send my brother over here. He will have lots of suggestions for you :)
  • xmaryrickx told me to stop by and give you some suggestions for fun places in Boston that are kid friendly.

First, the new Legal Seafood in the seaport are is really nice. There is one level of "fine dining" but even the "normal" part of the restaurant was nice. I had not been impressed with other LS but this was delicious.

Giacomos in the South End is a great Italian restaurant that is well priced and good food. Their North End home is always packed!!! http://giacomosblog-boston.blogspot.com/

Tasty Burger in the Fenway is a fun burger place. Very inexpensive, but yummy.

Flour Bakery has three locations, one is behind the newly renovated Children's Museum. It's a great place to get a good sandwich for lunch and a delicious cookie! (Oh, and their sticky buns.... OMG)

Charleys on Newbury is ok... and would be good for a family.

Steve's Greek on Newbury has delicious, inexpensive Greek food, perfect for lunch.

Tico is a little fancy, a little expensive, but could be fun with a family, especially for lunch,

Geoffrey's is a South End classic. Inexpensive, but good comfort foods. The Sunday Disco brunch features a fabulous doughnut muffin! It's a very family friendly place... but because it's in the South End there will be many "friends of Dorothy" there (You might even see my partner and I.)

    http://www.geoffreyscafebar.com/aboutus.html

North End Pastry... now you will see hundreds of little white and blue boxes from Mikes pastry walking around, and that's great. But I highly recommend stopping by Maria's for one (or five) of her AMAZING cannoli. (They fill them to order.)

If it's to hot out, and your looking for something interesting to do inside, I recommend the top of the Prudential Center. It's a little pricey, but I was pleasantly surprised when I took my father up there.

If you have a chance, you may also want to take the boats over to the harbor islands. Just make reservations in advance...

If you have any specific questions let me know...

Avoid Max Brenner's... I could not wait to try it... I mean a chocolate based restaurant, how could you go wrong? Blech!

Joe's American Bar and Grill was terrible the last time I went.

  • i loved tresca in the north end we had dinner on the terrace but that was obviously just DH & i. i lived in NYC for ten years and i still think boston's north end has better restaurants than little italy. pizzeria regina at a non-prime time would be good with the kiddos.

spike's junkyard dogs (technically a RI thing but they are still delish in boston)

there's now a wagamama in faneuil hall, we went there with our friends who have two kids.

j.p. licks is one of my favorite places for ice cream (newbury street is the most central location, i think . . .)

  • Cabots in Newton for great ice cream!

    I agree Finale is yum.

    I like Stephanie's on Newbury for lunch--good salads,etc...

  • Also thought about Jasper White's Summer Shack, which is mostly seafood, but family friendly and not to expensive.

I'm very, very, very sad to say that JP Licks on Newbury Street is closed.

The good news is that they are opening a store on Charles Street in Beacon Hill.

I'm not really a fan of Finale and that would not make my list of family friendly recommendations. Fancy, expensive desserts... meh...

BTW I would also avoid any of the fancy cupcake boutiques in Boston as most of them are terrible and expensive. KickAss cupcakes has a food truck that is pretty good. The Buttery in the South End and Flour Bakery both have good cupcakes. The Buttery is pretty decent for sandwiches, they just take forever!!!!

Speaking of Foodtrucks... If it's a nice day you might see Roxy's Grilled Cheese, Bon Me, Clover, Grilled Cheese Nation or a host of other fun foodtrucks around town. Each food truck has it's own personality (well, Roxy's and Grilled Cheese nation are both Grilled Cheese, but Roxy's was on The Great Foodtruck Race so it's more famous... and we do like it a little better.) There is usually a bit of a wait, but they could be fun for a family on a beautiful day.

PP mentioned Stephanie's and there is a sister restaurant, Stephi's on Tremont (I really hate that abbreviated name for some reason...) SO and I have eaten there on occasion and we leave thinking, "that was ok, wow... we spent how much?" The one on Newbury kind of drives me nuts. It tends to be a scene to be seen kind of place. People sitting on the patio with way to much make-up/plastic surgery. It seems to have replaced the old Armani Cafe.

  • I typed out a whole long response yesterday and then the Nest ate my post Sad  I'll give it another shot.

    In Chinatown:

Hong Kong Eatery for casual comfort food.  Everything there is delicious.

East Ocean City and Hei La Moon for more of a sit-down dinner.  The latter is also great for dim sum.

Dumpling Cafe for the best xiao long bao (soup dumplings) in the city, and that's saying a lot as we now have probably half a dozen really good Taiwanese places in the greater Boston area.

Crown Royal Bakery for the best egg tarts.  Ho Yuen or Hing Shing bakeries for everything else.

    Elsewhere in Boston:

I love brunch at Stella in the South End.  If you're coming during the summer, you could also walk over to the SOWA Open Market from there for some fun shopping afterwards.  I don't think the summer dates are up on the website yet.

Cafe Luna in Cambridge also has an excellent brunch but you'll want to try to get reservations in advance as it's a small place.

Le's in Harvard Square has pretty good Vietnamese.  Harvard Square is also home to Bartley's Burgers and at least half a dozen different ice cream places (including J.P. Licks) so definitely worth considering a trip over on the red line.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I have a ton of suggestions, but I'll leave it at one. East Coast Grill is one of the newest, trendiest joints in the city, and is welcome to all ages. I think you should try it out.
