Dyspepsia?

Anyone ever have experience with this? What was your treatment and do you feel better? My doctor thinks I'm either suffering from a stomach ulcer or have functional dyspepsia. I've never heard of it until today, but I've had a burning/cramping feeling in my upper abdomen for the past 3 weeks, my stomach is distended, and I'm nauseous after every meal. Ugh.

Any info would be helpful. TIA!

dyspepsia is just a fancy word for indigestion, have you tried OTC acid reflux meds, or did your dr prescribe any?

She has me taking omeprazole and changing my diet. She says that if my symptoms don't subside in 2 weeks then we are going to do an upper endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy.

Good, although 2 weeks seems like a short amount of time, I know that insurance carriers usually want to you to try 2-3 different meds before jumping into expensive procedures. Also, sigmoid only looks at part of your intestine, not your colon, if you are going to go through the misery and prep, might as well have the whole thing done! You do not get put "under" for a sigmoid, I did it at 23 and it was the most painful experience of my life! It was also fruitless, since it said I was fine, and when I finally got the insurance to do the full colonoscopy two year later, the found the crohns they would have found if they did it right the first time.

I think the two week number comes from the fact that I've been symptomatic for a month and she doesn't want to put me through my symptoms longer than I have to be. She's pretty aggressive tactic wise for a doctor.

Hi, are we twins? This has been me. I don't think my stomach is distended, though. I was having some bathroom issues as well, but I think ::fingers crossed:: they've been fixed. I think. I went to a medical aid center bc my doctor doesn't have office hours on Fridays (dumb) and he told me to go on the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast). It didn't do a darn thing.

I saw my PCP yesterday, and she gave me samples of Nexium to take for a week, and then is putting me on omeprazole. I had made an appointment with a GI doctor before seeing her. I'm going to see how I feel on the Nexium (just started it yesterday) and then I'm going to decide if I want to keep my appt with the GI doc or not.

@RecoveringActor -

It is a sucky situation. My doctor told me to stay away from caffeine (no coffee!!!), chocolate, spicy food, all soda (regardless of caffeine content), and high sodium products. Basically, everything that I love. I've only been doing it for two days and not having my coffee makes me miserable.

I started on omeprazole and I can't stop burping now. Not sure what that means.
