How much...

... is the appropriate amount to spend on a 'you just had a beautiful new baby' gift? She's a good friend (though she lives pretty far away now and I couldn't go to the shower), but I wanted to get her something to celebrate her new addition. I spent a little more than $50 on a few small things from Target, and she's gushing all over me like I bought her the whole store.

I thought $50 would be appropriate slash maybe even not enough... I had planned on maybe getting her something else when she came back up to VA in August.

Just out of curiosity, what's your typical gift?

Re: How much...

  • I would keep my total spending around $100-$125 for a good friend for a new baby.  So that would include shower gift, birthday gift, and 1st visit gift...but that's just me!
  • I don't think $50 is bad at all!  Baby stuff isn't cheap!  I would say I usually spend between $25-$30.  But the showers I've been to aren't for super close friends.

  • Honestly, I think $50-75 is good.  What I like to do is split a large gift with a friend or two (like the car seat, etc, which can be super pricey).  Or what we did for a colleague of my husband, we got a gift certificate for a local restaurant that delivers so that they don't have to worry about cooking dinner one night.

  • I think that's a good amount. My family and I split the funds for a car seat, so I think my portion came out to about $50.
  • For baby showers most people I know spend around $25 for a gift. If I get the chance I will go to Build-a-Bear and get a bear with a version of the child's name on their actual birthday.

  • I think 50 is good. If I had it to spare I might go to $75 but not necessarily.

Maybe she was just excited you got her really good stuff, because many people just get whatever they want and there are lots of different baby styles out there. I remember getting things we never used once.

  • That's what I probably would have spent. Ditto everyone else too.
