Going pull-ups/diaper free at nap and bedtime

When did you start letting your child sleep without protection (diapers/pull-ups)?  DD has been staying dry at nap from probably 5 weeks and she's starting to stay dry at night too.  I was think of starting with nap, but I'm affaid she'll freak out if she has an accident.  Also, what did you use to protect the bed?

Re: Going pull-ups/diaper free at nap and bedtime

  • I think once I ran out of pull ups..... I just decided to go with it.

I have a waterproof pad that covers the mattress. Knock on wood she did fine.

    Good luck!!

  • Both kids have mattress covers that are waterproof and I have two for each bed.

H trained 3 months after turning 3 and T trained right before he turned 3. At the time they trained, neither one was napping at home but they were still napping at daycare. Daycare opted to try naps without a pull-up and both of them did fine. For various reasons (mostly related to child stubborn-ness), we tried going cold turkey with both of them overnight when they were day trained.

H had a handful of accidents over the course of 2-3 weeks. Then for a while she was getting up to pee a few times a week, and now she only gets up overnight to pee about once a month.

T had accidents in bed for a while, but he would also have dry nights, so we decided it was better to deal with the extra laundry than to fuss with pull-ups. At this point it has been a few weeks since he had an overnight accident (he trained in April/May) and he wakes up 2-3 times a week to pee overnight.

Neither of my kids are big drinkers. They drink for thirst, but rarely drink a ton unless it is hot. Also, neither of them was super upset to have an accident. Sometimes we didn't even know they were wet until they woke up in the morning.

  • i stopped with nap once she stopped waking up wet- and always had her go potty before we went to her room.  This was a while before she could go overnight. I waited until she was waking up overnight dry for a while too (and once we ran out of diapers too).

I keep her waterproof mattress pad from her crib over her regular waterproof mattress pad so I don't have to wash it all if by chance she has had an accident. I think we may have had 2 over the past couple years.  One of which was due to us forgetting to make her go potty before she went to bed.

  • DD PT'd really early so we kept her in pull-ups overnight for about a year before finally trying to go without. We just went cold-turkey on overnights around 2 1/2 and it was really smooth. I think she used the diaper b/c she knew it was there, once it was off she just started getting up on the nights she needed to use the bathroom. She had a 3-4 accidents in the first few weeks but none since then. We have a waterproof mattress pad from Bed Bath & Beyond that was about $25, no issues with it.

ETA - I was worried about DD getting upset if she had an accident too so we talked about it a lot. I told her we were gonna go without pull-ups but everyone has accidents sometimes so it's not a big deal, etc.She took it pretty well but it broke my heart when she'd look up at me and say "sorry mommy" :(

That would break my heart too.  But it's good to hear she took it well.  I think I'll start with naps for now and use up the rest of my pull-ups for night time.

  • Faith was a little over 3 1/2 yrs old! I let her choose to, she ran out at my parents house of night time pull ups and wanted to wear undies only, so they said okay....well she was sleeping over there 1/2 the week cause of school vacation and she wanted to....came home and demanded no pull ups and just undies;) we have the waterproof mattress cover on her mattress ...we've only had one or two accidents since, but I make sure to remind her to go before bed and that if she has the urge to go pee/poo to get up and go and go straight back to bed

  • One day shortly after she turned 3, Brinley stated that princesses didn't wear diapers to bed and refused to wear one.  She hadn't been waking up dry, but I suspected that she was just peeing in the diaper because she could, not because she couldn't hold it.

I was right, because she went for months straight without a single accident.  And has only had 2 accidents in 5 months.

  • For protection, I used a plastic matress cover with another Carter's matress cover over top. She had very few accidents though. I started letting her do naps with no pullup when she started pooping on the potty (b/c she was peeing well, but would wait till nap time to poop). Once that was not longer a concern, the pee was easy. I just made sure she went before she laid down and I kept a small potty chair in the corner of her room for emergencies. After a few naps with no pullup, overnights soon followed. It was easier than I hoped. Now Wes will probably be a different story!

We used pull-ups for nighttime for about a month after DD was potty trained. (We never used them for naps.) DD wasn't really wetting them though, so we switched to undies, and we've never had an issue. We have a waterproof mattress cover on her mattress just in case.
