Let me start with some background... The company where I work filed for bankruptcy in January. I survived the first round of layoffs, but found out yesterday that I (along with 95% of the others) am being let go effective at the end of August. I would normally look for a new job, but H will be transferred to NYC with his job by March of next year, so I don't want to start something new just to quit a few months later.
Anyway, H has a good job and can cover the bills and stuff - I have been earning quite a bit at this job, so we have a decent amount in savings and since I don't need to, I won't be looking for a new job until we are closer to moving to NYC (I will probably go earlier than him - around January time frame to start the job search and look for an apartment). That means I'll have September - December free.
I have been so career-focused (I am an accountant) and have been working since I finished my undergrad degree 12 (!!) years ago. Having 4 months off is a bit daunting, but I definitely don't want to waste it!
I think my plan is to spend a few weeks at home with my mom since I don't see her often and to visit some friends who I have not seen much of and then I am looking into taking a graphic design introductory course. It's always interested me and I just never had the time to learn more.
Just curious... What would you ladies do?
Re: What would you do if you had 4 months to kill?
I would probably look into taking a class or something just to keep me busy. I can't sit still. Can you look into a local college and maybe audit a class so that you can get some education without having to pay for credits?
We personally are in a perpetual state of home remodel,we have an old Victorian that we have been redoing room by room, so I'd probably get a lot of renovation stuff done, but you are moving! I love NYC we live about 2 hours away. I'm not sure I'd like to live there long term, but I always wanted to try it for a year or so.
I would catch up with old friends or go visit people that you don't get to see often. I would also start packing things that you won't need until after you move. Like once summer is over pack up those clothes.
You could always get a head start on looking up apartments and doing research on potential places to go look at when you do go actually looking at places.
I would look into any short term volunteer opportunities. There are so many things I would love to do, in a volunteer capacity, that I would totally take advantage and jump right in.
Or, since you'll be moving... I'd make sure I hit up all the 'touristy' places and things about where you are now. I know that whenever I live some place, I never get around to seeing the sights, because I'm too busy living my life
PP have great suggestions like auditing college classes or volunteering.
Is there anything you've said you wish you had time to do? I like taking photos and it's something I always wish I had more time to do, so I would take advantage of that. Or I love cooking and said if I had more time I would try to make everything from scratch (breads, pasta, etc.). Do you have anything like that?
H & I are also always saying, oh we should visit [wherever] because it's so close. Is there anyplace like that near you, that you'd love to visit but have never had time? Now would be the time before you move!
I know you said you were going to wait, but honestly I'd start looking for a job now. I think it's common for it to take 4-6 months depending on your field, and right now you have the benefit of being able to wait for the right opportunity instead of the "now" opportunity. I'd also start looking into places to live, but that's just me - I'm a planner and I can't just sit around and wait =]
Otherwise, if it were me...I'd probably read more, work out more, see my friends/family more...if you really think you are going to be bored, a lot of places hire seasonal works that time of year if you wanted to make a little extra cash!
