Rant/Vent

I'm going to whine for a minute.  My mom is turning 50 in August.  I tried to get my sister, who lives in the same place as my Mom, to help me plan a party for her back in May.  It's been me spinning my wheels trying to figure out what to do ever since.  New crick in the plan, my mom is having a full knee replacement next week.  I talked to my Dad and we both agreed we could just throw the party at their house so my Mom doesn't have to leave - they live in the middle of nowhere so it's a drive to get anywhere.

Here's the whiny part: all of a sudden my sister is interested in finding some place to rent but wants me to do all the calling, I know she can't afford it, so I'd end up paying for it, all because she doesn't want to have to help my Mom clean the house or be outside in August.  I suggested creating several misters to set up outside to combat the heat.  I even said I'd help clean the day of as I won't arrive until the night before.  Not an easy feat as my Mom is one tragedy away from being a full-blown hoarder.  Not exaggerating there. I'm just so frustrated because she hasn't cared before now.  This is the same sister who sent out the invitations to my bridal shower 3 days before it so almost no one showed up.  Grrrrrrrrr.

I know how you feel. My parents are semi hoarters too. They have a crazy amount of cludder in their house. It's so bad that I've never had my in-laws to their house (because they are neat freaks). I'm so embarrased by it and hope it gets better when my mom retires in September.

I hope you get everything worked out with the party!

  • My dad is the hoarder, and my mom is not. I unfortunately got my dad's tendencies. The problem is that everyone else needs to get rid of their stuff.

I would go for the party at the house. If your sister really wants to do it, she can do it and pay for it. Try not to get stressed either, because of the baby,

  • Your mom is the priority so I think you should have the party at her place. Tell your sister to put on her big girl panties and deal with it.

  • Thanks for all good advice.  Today has just been a day.  Darn pregnancy hormones. I'll call my sister tonight and let her know if she wants to rent something, it's on her.

My mom likes to use the excuse that her current house only has one closet and it's in the master bedroom.  While this is true, she's been like this for years and prior to this house.  Just way too much clutter and it's not all small.  I used to be embarrassed by it, but I figure if she doesn't care, then okay.  Most if not all of who we will invite have been to my parents house before so it won't be a surprise that it's cluttered.   I figured I'd help clean with the basics like vacuum and the bathroom since I don't see my teenage brother or my dad doing that much while she's laid up.

Amity, I bought my sister a sign a few years back to hang in her house about putting her big girl panties on.  LOL.  Kind of funny there.  Might just tell her to read it again.

  • I hope the phone call with your sister went okay. I definitely agree that if she wants to rent a place, she should pay for it.

My mom is a total hoarder and I have a tendency to keep things I don't need. I've gotten better about it over the years but I still have a hard time throwing out anything that has even the slightest bit of emotional value. Thank goodness Ben loves throwing stuff out!

  • Thanks Cony.  It went pretty well.  She said she'd let me know if she found a good deal and decided to book it herself.  Otherwise we are planning on having it at my mom's house.  I'm happy she was in a good mood about it all.

I can be bad about saving stuff, but I try to make myself sort through my closet and other catch-all places every few months.
