What size of rental do I need?

WingitWingit member
I'm not sure where to post this!

We are traveling in a few weeks for the first time with LO.  She will be 9 months by then. Since DH and I are both traveling for work, my parents are joining us as baby sitters but we're also working in some fun time. I'm trying to book a car right now and can't figure out what I need to fit us and our stuff. Or should I say, LO's stuff LOL.
We will have: 4 adults, 1 baby in car seat and probably 1 large suitcase, 4 small carryon size suitcases plus a stroller (City Mini). I was thinking a midsize suv which is a "Ford Escape or similar". I just don't know what else is similar. Anyone know what is "similar"? Or do I need a full size SUV?

I think the people fit just fine it's the luggage and stroller I'm concerned about. Keep in mind that we will only have all the luggage during 2 short drives to and from the airport. Does anyone know if the SUVs typiclly have a luggage room on top and if the rental companies allow you to put luggage up there? That would be a big problem solver I think!

Re: What size of rental do I need?

  • How much time will you end up being in the car? If it's just to go back and forth form the airport, I think the SUV would be fine. However, you'd definitely have much, much more room if you rent a minivan. I think Ford Escapes only seat 5 and don't have a third row of seating...with the minivan, you can comfortably seat 7 (or 8 depending on the van) with lots of room in the back. Might be worth it to consider the cost of renting a minivan compared to the small SUV.
  • call upo the rental company and ask them so you know for sure.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • How large are the 4 adults, my infant (bucket) seat took up a fair amount of space width wise, so seating two adults on one side or either side of infant seat might be an issue if they are tall or larger....would be uncomfortable for longer than 15 mins.

All 4 adults are small/thin build so I don't feel worried about the people fitting, just the stuff.  We will only be in the car with all the stuff to and from the airport.  The rest of the time it'll just be us and the stroller.

I actually did call the rental company and they just weren't much help.  They kept getting hung up on all the wrong details.  For example, when I asked what was another vehicle that is "similar" to the Ford Escape they just kept trying ot explain to me that they don't carry any Ford Escapes.  I only read what I found on their website and wanted them to list other examples of similar vehicles.
Plus I couldn't help but feel they would naturaly just want to get me into a bigger and more expensive.  I considered the full size SUV and minivan but they were 2 1/2 times more expensive than the mid size suv.

Thanks if anyone has any tips!  I'll also ask some girlfriends!

  • Sounds like you'll need a full size SUV or a minivan. We had 4 adults and a med sized dog, plus carry on sized luggage. I had booked an Escape but changed to a Yukon because it looked so cramped and had only a very tiny space for luggage (which didn't fit ours). The Yukon seats 8 but we took out the backseat and it was perfect for space & comfort, loved it. Another really great thing is they upgraded us to the Yukon for only $15/day more, so worth it!!
